Complex Conditionals
Condicionals Complexes
Complex Conditionals in Catalan
Overview
At the B2 level, you move beyond simple "if...will" conditionals to express hypothetical and counterfactual situations. These complex conditionals allow you to talk about things that are unlikely, impossible, or contrary to what actually happened.
The second conditional uses si + imperfect subjunctive + conditional for present/future unreal situations: Si pogués, ho faria (If I could, I would do it). The third conditional uses si + pluperfect subjunctive + conditional perfect for past counterfactuals: Si hagués estudiat, hauria aprovat (If I had studied, I would have passed). Mixed conditionals combine elements of both.
These structures are essential for nuanced expression — discussing regrets, imagining alternatives, and exploring hypothetical scenarios.
How It Works
Second Conditional (Present/Future Unreal)
Si + imperfect subjunctive + conditional
| Catalan | English |
|---|---|
| Si pogués, viatjaria. | If I could, I would travel. |
| Si fos ric, compraria una casa. | If I were rich, I would buy a house. |
| Si tingués temps, ho faria. | If I had time, I would do it. |
Third Conditional (Past Counterfactual)
Si + pluperfect subjunctive + conditional perfect
| Catalan | English |
|---|---|
| Si hagués estudiat, hauria aprovat. | If I had studied, I would have passed. |
| Si haguessis vingut, t'hauria agradat. | If you had come, you would have liked it. |
| Si no fos per tu, no ho hauria fet. | If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have done it. |
Mixed Conditionals
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Past condition → present result | Si hagués estudiat, ara sabria la resposta. | If I had studied, I would now know the answer. |
| Present condition → past result | Si fos més valent, ho hauria dit. | If I were braver, I would have said it. |

| Si haguéssim tingut temps, ho hauríem acabat. | If we had had time, we would have finished. | 3rd conditional |

Common Mistakes
Using conditional in both clauses
- Wrong: Si podria, viatjaria.
- Right: Si pogués, viatjaria.
- Why: The si-clause always takes the subjunctive, never the conditional.
Confusing second and third conditionals
- 2nd (present unreal): Si tingués diners... (If I had money — but I don't now)
- 3rd (past unreal): Si hagués tingut diners... (If I had had money — but I didn't then)
- Why: The second conditional refers to an unreal present/future; the third to an unreal past.
Forgetting the auxiliary in the third conditional
- Wrong: Si estudiat, hauria aprovat.
- Right: Si hagués estudiat, hauria aprovat.
- Why: The pluperfect subjunctive requires the auxiliary hagués + past participle.
Usage Notes
In colloquial Catalan, the imperfect indicative often replaces the imperfect subjunctive in the si-clause: Si havia estudiat, hauria aprovat (colloquial) vs. Si hagués estudiat, hauria aprovat (standard). Similarly, the periphrastic conditional (vaig a forms) sometimes replaces the standard conditional. In formal and written Catalan, use the standard forms.
Practice Tips
- Express five regrets using the third conditional: "Si hagués estudiat més..." "Si hagués anat a aquella festa..."
- Create hypothetical career paths: "Si fos astronauta..." "Si fos cuiner..." "Si fos president..."
- Practice mixed conditionals by combining past causes with present effects and vice versa.
