Conditional Mood in Catalan

Condicional

This article is part of the Catalan grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

The conditional mood in Catalan expresses what would happen under certain conditions, as well as polite requests and hypothetical situations. At the B1 level, it is essential for expressing wishes, making polite requests, and constructing conditional sentences.

The conditional is formed from the same stems as the future tense but with different endings: -ia, -ies, -ia, -íem, -íeu, -ien. This means any verb with an irregular future stem uses that same stem for the conditional. If you know the future, learning the conditional is straightforward.

The conditional is widely used in everyday Catalan for politeness (Voldria un cafè — I would like a coffee) and for imagining different realities (Si pogués, viatjaria — If I could, I would travel).

How It Works

Conditional Formation

Person cantar beure dormir
jo cantaria beuria dormiria
tu cantaries beuries dormiries
ell/ella cantaria beuria dormiria
nosaltres cantaríem beuríem dormiríem
vosaltres cantaríeu beuríeu dormiríeu
ells/elles cantarien beurien dormirien

Irregular Stems (Same as Future)

Infinitive Conditional stem jo form
ser ser- seria
tenir tindr- tindria
fer far- faria
dir dir- diria
poder podr- podria
voler voldr- voldria
saber sabr- sabria
haver haur- hauria

Uses

Common Mistakes

Confusing conditional and imperfect endings

  • Conditional: cantaria, cantaries, cantaria...
  • Imperfect: cantava, cantaves, cantava...
  • Why: Both describe non-real or past situations, but their forms are different. The conditional uses the future stem + -ia endings.

Using conditional after "si" (if)

  • Wrong: Si podria, viatjaria.
  • Right: Si pogués, viatjaria.
  • Why: After "si," use the imperfect subjunctive (pogués), not the conditional. The conditional goes in the main clause (result).

Forgetting irregular stems

  • Wrong: Teniria temps.
  • Right: Tindria temps.
  • Why: Irregular conditional stems are the same as future stems. If the future is "tindré," the conditional is "tindria."

Usage Notes

In spoken Catalan, the conditional is often replaced by the imperfect indicative in informal contexts: Si podia, ho feia instead of Si pogués, ho faria. While grammatically less standard, this usage is widespread in colloquial speech across Catalan-speaking areas.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice polite requests: "Voldria..., podria..., seria possible...?" These are immediately useful in shops, restaurants, and offices.
  2. Create hypothetical chains: "Si tingués diners, viatjaria. Si viatgés, aniria a Japó. Si anés a Japó, menjaria sushi."
  3. Learn the irregular stems once and use them for both future and conditional — they are the same set.
