Combined Weak Pronouns in Catalan

Overview

When a verb has both a direct and an indirect object pronoun (or includes en/hi), the pronouns combine according to specific rules. At the B2 level, mastering these combinations is essential for fluent Catalan, as they appear constantly in everyday speech and writing.

The order of combined pronouns is fixed: reflexive → indirect object → direct object → en/hi. When two pronouns meet, they may contract, change form, or require apostrophes and hyphens. The written forms can look complex, but the spoken versions are natural once internalized.

Catalan pronoun combinations are among the most complex features of the language. Even native speakers occasionally hesitate with rare combinations. Focus on the most common patterns first.

Common Mistakes

Wrong pronoun order

  • Wrong: Ho li vaig dir.
  • Right: Li ho vaig dir.
  • Why: The indirect object (li) comes before the direct object/ho. The fixed order must be followed.

Forgetting written contractions

  • Wrong: Me el va donar.
  • Right: Me'l va donar.
  • Why: When me/te/se precede el/els/en, they contract with apostrophes.

Confusion with li + el/la

  • Note: In standard Catalan, "li'l" (to him/her + it) exists but is uncommon. Often restructured.
  • Common alternative: Li ho vaig donar (using "ho" instead of "el/la")
  • Why: Some combinations are awkward even for native speakers. "Ho" (it, the whole thing) is a common simplification.

Usage Notes

Pronoun combinations are a notorious difficulty of Catalan. In informal speech, speakers sometimes simplify by dropping one pronoun or using "ho" as a catch-all. In formal and written Catalan, the full combinations are expected. The Institut d'Estudis Catalans provides standard rules for all combinations, including the apostrophe and hyphen conventions.

Practice Tips

  1. Start with the most common combinations: me'l, te'l, li ho, ens ho, se'n. Practice these in sentences until they feel natural.
  2. Take sentences with two objects and replace both with pronouns: "Dono el llibre a la Maria" → "Li'l dono" or "Li ho dono."
  3. Practice the spoken forms before worrying about written conventions. The pronunciation flows naturally; the spelling follows specific rules.
