Duration and Frequency in Chinese

Overview

Expressing duration (how long) and frequency (how many times) in Chinese requires careful word order because these expressions follow the verb -- unlike time words (today, tomorrow) which precede it. Duration uses time periods: 学了三年 (studied for three years). Frequency uses 次 (times) or 遍 (complete instances): 去过两次 (been there twice).

At the CEFR B1 level, mastering duration and frequency expressions allows you to describe experiences in detail. The tricky part is handling objects: when a verb has both a duration/frequency expression and an object, special word order rules apply.

The key distinction between 次 (cì) and 遍 (biàn) is that 次 counts occurrences while 遍 counts complete run-throughs (reading a whole book, watching a whole movie).

How It Works

Duration: Verb + Time period

Pattern Example Meaning
V + 了 + duration 学了三年 studied for 3 years
V + duration + 的 + N 三年的中文 3 years of Chinese
V + N + V + duration 学中文学了三年 studied Chinese for 3 years

Frequency: Verb + Number + 次/遍

Pattern Example Meaning
V + 过 + num + 次 去过两次 been twice
V + num + 遍 看了三遍 read 3 times through

With objects (word order)

Situation Pattern Example
Duration, no object V + duration 等了两个小时
Duration + object V + Obj + V + duration 学中文学了三年
Duration + object (alt) V + 了 + duration + 的 + Obj 学了三年的中文
Frequency + object V + 了 + Obj + num + 次 去了中国两次

Common Mistakes

Placing duration before the verb

  • Wrong: 我三年学了中文。(I three-years studied Chinese.)
  • Right: 我学了三年中文。(I studied Chinese for three years.)
  • Why: Duration expressions follow the verb, not precede it (unlike time-point expressions which do precede verbs).

Confusing 次 and 遍

  • Wrong: 这本书我看了三次 when meaning "I read it through three times"
  • Right: 这本书我看了三遍 (read it completely three times)
  • Why: 遍 means a complete cycle; 次 means an occurrence. For books and movies, 遍 is more precise.

Incorrect object placement with duration

  • Wrong: 我学了中文三年。
  • Right: 我学了三年中文。or 我学中文学了三年。
  • Why: Duration comes between the verb and the object, or the verb is repeated with the duration after the second instance.

Practice Tips

  • Practice with personal experiences: 我学了...年中文, 我来过...次中国. Personalize the patterns.
  • Master the common phrase 请再说一遍 (please say it again) -- it is invaluable for language learners.
  • When the word order feels confusing, try the verb-repeat pattern: 学中文学了三年. It is always safe.
