Topic-Comment Structure in Chinese
Overview
Topic-comment structure (话题句, huàtí jù) is a fundamental feature of Chinese that goes beyond simple SVO word order. In a topic-comment sentence, the topic -- what the sentence is about -- is placed at the front, followed by a comment about it. The topic need not be the grammatical subject: 这本书我看过 (This book, I've read it) places the object first.
At the CEFR B1 level, understanding topic-comment structure helps explain many sentences that seem to have "wrong" word order from an English perspective. Chinese is fundamentally a topic-prominent language, meaning it prioritizes telling the listener what is being talked about before providing information about it.
Topic-comment is not just an occasional variation -- it is one of the most natural ways to organize information in Chinese. It appears in casual conversation, formal writing, and everything in between.
How It Works
Pattern: Topic + Comment (about the topic)
| Topic | Comment | Full sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 这本书 | 我看过 | 这本书我看过。 | This book, I've read. |
| 中文 | 我学了三年 | 中文我学了三年。 | Chinese, I've studied for 3 years. |
| 他的情况 | 我了解 | 他的情况我了解。 | His situation, I understand. |
Types of topic-comment
| Type | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Object as topic | 这件事我知道。 | Object fronted |
| Time as topic | 明天我不来。 | Time fronted |
| Place as topic | 这个地方我来过。 | Place fronted |
| Possessor as topic | 他身体不好。 | "His body isn't good" → "He's not healthy" |
| General topic | 学中文,最难的是声调。 | About learning Chinese, the hardest part is tones |

Common Mistakes
Confusing topic-comment with SVO errors
- Wrong: Thinking 这本书我看过 is wrong because "book" comes first
- Right: This is a perfectly natural and common Chinese structure
- Why: Chinese allows and often prefers fronting the topic. It is not an error but a fundamental feature.
Overusing topic-comment in English-influenced patterns
- Wrong: Always using SVO when topic-comment would be more natural
- Right: 你要的东西我买了 is more natural than 我买了你要的东西 in certain contexts
- Why: When the topic is already known or established in conversation, fronting it creates smoother, more natural discourse.
Forgetting that the topic must be definite or generic
- Wrong: 一本书我看过。(A book, I've read.)
- Right: 这本书我看过。(This book, I've read.)
- Why: Topics are typically definite or generic; indefinite noun phrases do not naturally serve as topics.
Practice Tips
- Practice restructuring SVO sentences: take 我看过这本书 and convert to 这本书我看过. Notice how the emphasis shifts.
- Listen for topic-comment in native speech -- it is extremely common. News broadcasts, conversations, and narratives all use it frequently.
- When answering questions, try putting the relevant topic first: Q: 这个菜好吃吗? A: 这个菜嘛,还可以。
