Temporal Connectors in Vietnamese
Từ Nối Thời Gian
Overview
Vietnamese temporal connectors link clauses by specifying their time relationship. The core connectors are "khi" (when), "trước khi" (before), "sau khi" (after), "trong khi" (while), "ngay khi" (as soon as), and "từ khi" (since). These create complex sentences that describe sequences, simultaneity, and temporal boundaries.
At the CEFR A2 level, temporal connectors enable storytelling and describing sequences of events. They follow predictable patterns: the connector introduces a subordinate clause that provides temporal context for the main clause.
Unlike English, Vietnamese does not require tense changes in subordinate clauses after temporal connectors. "Khi tôi đến" can mean "when I arrive" or "when I arrived" depending on context, since the verb "đến" does not change.
How It Works
| Connector | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| khi | when | Khi tôi đến, anh ấy đã đi. |
| trước khi | before | Trước khi ngủ, tôi đọc sách. |
| sau khi | after | Sau khi ăn, chúng tôi đi. |
| trong khi | while/during | Trong khi chờ, tôi uống cà phê. |
| ngay khi | as soon as | Ngay khi đến, gọi cho tôi. |
| từ khi | since | Từ khi đến đây, tôi rất vui. |
| cho đến khi | until | Đợi cho đến khi tôi gọi. |
| mỗi khi | whenever/every time | Mỗi khi trời mưa, tôi buồn. |

| Sau khi ăn, chúng tôi đi. | After eating, we left. | sau khi = after |
| Trong khi chờ, tôi uống cà phê. | While waiting, I drank coffee. | trong khi = while |
| Ngay khi biết, tôi gọi điện. | As soon as I knew, I called. | ngay khi = immediately when |
| Từ khi gặp bạn, tôi vui hơn. | Since meeting you, I'm happier. | từ khi = since |
| Cho đến khi xong. | Until it's done. | cho đến khi = until |
| Mỗi khi nghĩ đến, tôi cười. | Whenever I think of it, I laugh. | mỗi khi = whenever |
| Lúc đó tôi đang ngủ. | At that time I was sleeping. | lúc = at the time |

Common Mistakes
Changing Verb Forms After Temporal Connectors
- Wrong: Trying to use past tense after "khi" (as in English "when I arrived")
- Right: Use the base verb; context and markers handle tense
- Why: Vietnamese verbs do not change form in subordinate clauses.
Confusing Khi and Lúc
- Wrong: Thinking they are completely different
- Right: "Khi" and "lúc" both mean "when/at the time" and are largely interchangeable
- Why: "Khi" is slightly more formal; "lúc" is slightly more casual. Both work in most contexts.
Omitting Khi in Compound Forms
- Wrong: Trước ngủ (before sleep -- missing khi)
- Right: Trước khi ngủ (before sleeping)
- Why: Compound temporal connectors require "khi" as their core element.
Usage Notes
Temporal connectors can appear at the beginning or middle of a sentence. Beginning position is more common for establishing context: "Khi tôi đến, ..." Starting with the main clause is also possible: "Tôi gọi điện ngay khi biết."
Practice Tips
- Narrate your daily routine using temporal connectors: "Trước khi đi làm, tôi ăn sáng. Sau khi ăn, tôi đi." This builds natural sequencing skills.
- Practice "trong khi" for describing simultaneous actions, a concept that comes up frequently in conversation.
