Narrating Events in Vietnamese

Câu Tường Thuật

Overview

Vietnamese narrative sequencing uses connector words to order events: "đầu tiên" (first), "sau đó" (then/after that), "tiếp theo" (next), and "cuối cùng" (finally). Combined with tense markers and temporal connectors, these words create coherent narratives.

At the CEFR B1 level, narrating sequences of events is essential for telling stories, recounting experiences, and explaining processes. Vietnamese narrative style often relies more on these explicit sequence markers than on tense changes.

How It Works

Sequence Marker Meaning Position
đầu tiên first/firstly sentence-initial
sau đó after that/then sentence-initial
tiếp theo next sentence-initial
rồi then/and then between clauses
cuối cùng finally/lastly sentence-initial
sau cùng in the end sentence-initial
trước hết first of all sentence-initial

Common Mistakes

Using Only Rồi for All Sequencing

  • Wrong: Tôi ăn, rồi tôi đi, rồi tôi ngủ, rồi...
  • Right: Mix markers: "Đầu tiên... sau đó... cuối cùng..."
  • Why: Overusing "rồi" sounds monotonous. Varying sequence markers creates better narrative flow.

Forgetting to Set the Scene

  • Wrong: Jumping directly into sequential events
  • Right: Start with context: "Hôm qua, tôi ở nhà. Đầu tiên..."
  • Why: Vietnamese narratives typically establish time and place before the sequence begins.

Usage Notes

"Rồi" is the most casual sequencer, used constantly in spoken narratives. "Đầu tiên...sau đó...cuối cùng" is more structured and suitable for both spoken and written narratives. "Trước hết" is more formal than "đầu tiên."

Practice Tips

  • Retell your day using the full sequence: "Đầu tiên, tôi dậy. Sau đó, tôi ăn sáng. Tiếp theo, tôi đi làm. Cuối cùng, tôi về nhà."
  • Practice retelling a movie plot or news event using these markers to build extended narrative fluency.
