Conditional Sentences in Vietnamese
Câu Điều Kiện
Overview
Vietnamese conditional sentences use "nếu" (if) to introduce the condition and optionally "thì" to introduce the result. Unlike English, Vietnamese does not change verb forms for different conditional types (real, unreal, counterfactual). The same structure "nếu...thì..." handles all conditional meanings, with context and tense markers providing the distinction.
At the CEFR B1 level, conditional sentences allow expressing hypothetical situations, giving advice, and discussing cause-and-effect relationships. The simplicity of the Vietnamese conditional system -- no subjunctive mood, no verb changes -- is a significant advantage for learners.
"Giả sử" (suppose) provides a more formal or hypothetical alternative to "nếu," and "nếu mà" (if indeed) adds emphasis to the condition.
How It Works
| Type | Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real condition | Nếu A, (thì) B | Nếu trời mưa, tôi không đi. | If it rains, I won't go. |
| Hypothetical | Nếu A, (thì) B | Nếu có tiền, tôi sẽ mua. | If I had money, I would buy it. |
| Counterfactual | Nếu (đã) A, (thì đã) B | Nếu biết trước, tôi đã không làm. | If I had known, I wouldn't have done it. |
| Formal | Giả sử A, B | Giả sử cần, xin liên hệ. | Suppose you need (it), please contact. |
Thì is optional but adds clarity:
| With thì | Without thì |
|---|---|
| Nếu rảnh thì đi. | Nếu rảnh, đi. |

Common Mistakes
Using Different Structures for Real vs Unreal Conditions
- Wrong: Thinking Vietnamese has separate conditional structures like English
- Right: The same "nếu...thì..." works for all conditional types
- Why: Vietnamese relies on context and aspect markers (đã for past counterfactual, sẽ for future) rather than structural differences.
Omitting Nếu When It Is Needed
- Wrong: Trời mưa, tôi không đi. (ambiguous -- could be causal or conditional)
- Right: Nếu trời mưa, tôi không đi.
- Why: Without "nếu," the sentence could be interpreted as a statement about the past rather than a condition.
Usage Notes
Counterfactual conditions in Vietnamese are marked by "đã" in both clauses: "Nếu tôi đã biết, tôi đã không đi" (If I had known, I would not have gone). The "đã" signals that the condition was not met.
"Thì" is a versatile topic marker that appears in conditionals to clearly separate the condition from the result. It is more common in writing and careful speech.
Practice Tips
- Practice all three conditional types with the same scenario: "Nếu trời mưa, tôi không đi" (real), "Nếu trời mưa, tôi sẽ không đi" (hypothetical future), "Nếu trời đã mưa, tôi đã không đi" (counterfactual past).
- Use "nếu...thì..." for giving advice: "Nếu mệt thì nghỉ" (If tired, then rest).
