Conjunctions and Connectors in Vietnamese

Overview

At the CEFR B2 level, Vietnamese conjunctions and connectors expand beyond basic pairs to include nuanced logical relationships. Key additions include "tuy nhiên" (however), "mặc dù...nhưng..." (although...but...), "hơn nữa" (moreover), and "trong khi đó" (meanwhile). These enable academic argumentation and sophisticated written expression.

Vietnamese connector pairs often work as frames around the clauses they connect, unlike English where connectors typically appear between clauses. The paired structure "mặc dù...nhưng..." (although...but...) exemplifies this, with both parts being standard (unlike English where using "although" and "but" together is redundant).

mặc dù...nhưng although...but paired concessive

Common Mistakes

Using Mặc Dù Without Nhưng

  • Wrong: Mặc dù mệt, tôi đi. (incomplete pair in formal writing)
  • Right: Mặc dù mệt, nhưng tôi vẫn đi.
  • Why: In Vietnamese, both parts of the "mặc dù...nhưng" pair are standard and expected.

Mixing Formality Levels

  • Wrong: Using "tuy nhiên" in casual chat
  • Right: Use "nhưng mà" casually; reserve "tuy nhiên" for formal contexts
  • Why: Register mismatch sounds awkward. Match connector formality to context.

Usage Notes

Vietnamese formal writing uses connectors more explicitly than spoken language. Written arguments typically mark every logical relationship, while conversation relies more on context and implication. Learning to deploy connectors appropriately by register is a B2-level skill.

Practice Tips

  • Write short argumentative paragraphs using three or more connectors: state a point, add with "hơn nữa," contrast with "tuy nhiên," conclude with "vì vậy."
  • Read Vietnamese news articles and highlight connectors to see how they structure arguments.
