Purpose Clauses with Để in Vietnamese

Cấu Trúc Để

This article is part of the Vietnamese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

"Để" (in order to / so that) introduces purpose clauses that explain why an action is performed. It connects a main action to its intended goal: "Tôi học để thi" (I study to take the exam). "Để" also functions in polite offers: "Để tôi giúp" (Let me help).

At the CEFR B1 level, purpose clauses with "để" enable explaining motivations and goals, a significant step beyond simple sequential actions. This structure is essential for discussing plans, reasons, and intentions.

Common Mistakes

Confusing Để (Purpose) and Để (Leave/Put)

  • Wrong: Interpreting "Để tôi giúp" as "Put me help"
  • Right: "Để" here means "let" -- "Let me help"
  • Why: "Để" has multiple meanings: purpose (in order to), permission (let), and placement (put/leave). Context determines which.

Using Để When a Serial Verb Construction Suffices

  • Wrong: Tôi đi để ăn. (I go to eat -- unnecessarily formal)
  • Right: Tôi đi ăn. (I go eat.)
  • Why: Simple action sequences use serial verbs without "để." Reserve "để" for explicit purpose emphasis.

Usage Notes

"Để" at the beginning of a sentence in offers ("Để tôi...") is extremely common and polite. It is one of the easiest ways to offer help: "Để tôi mang" (Let me carry it), "Để tôi trả" (Let me pay).

Practice Tips

  • Practice purpose statements with daily activities: "Tôi đi chợ để mua đồ ăn" (I go to the market to buy food). Connect every action to its purpose.
  • Use "Để tôi..." to offer help in various situations: carrying bags, opening doors, explaining things.
