Advanced Prepositions in Vietnamese

Overview

Beyond basic location prepositions, Vietnamese uses complex prepositional phrases and compound prepositions for more nuanced spatial, temporal, and abstract relationships. At the CEFR A2 level, these include "từ...đến" (from...to), "giữa" (between/among), "xung quanh" (around), "đối với" (regarding/for), and "theo" (according to/following).

These advanced prepositions enable more sophisticated descriptions of spatial relationships, abstract references, and logical connections between ideas. Many are compound forms built from simpler elements, making them partially transparent once you know the components.

How It Works

theo according to/along Theo tôi biết. As far as I know.

Common Mistakes

Confusing Từ...Đến with Từ...Tới

  • Wrong: Thinking "đến" and "tới" are different here
  • Right: "Từ...đến" and "từ...tới" are interchangeable
  • Why: Both "đến" and "tới" mean "to/arrive at." The choice is regional preference.

Using Đối Với Too Broadly

  • Wrong: Đối với bàn (regarding the table -- for physical location)
  • Right: Use "đối với" for abstract reference (opinions, perspectives), not physical location
  • Why: "Đối với" introduces a perspective or topic, not a physical position.

Omitting the Second Part of Paired Prepositions

  • Wrong: Từ Hà Nội Sài Gòn (missing "đến")
  • Right: Từ Hà Nội đến Sài Gòn.
  • Why: "Từ...đến" is a paired structure; both parts are required.

Usage Notes

"Theo" is versatile: "theo tôi" (in my opinion / follow me), "theo đường" (along the road), "theo luật" (according to law). Context determines the specific meaning.

"Về" as a preposition meaning "about/regarding" is distinct from "về" as a verb meaning "return." Position in the sentence disambiguates: "Về nhà" (return home -- verb) vs "Về vấn đề này" (about this issue -- preposition).

Practice Tips

  • Practice "từ...đến" with both spatial and temporal ranges: "từ nhà đến trường" (from home to school), "từ thứ hai đến thứ sáu" (from Monday to Friday).
  • Use "đối với" to express opinions: "Đối với tôi, phở ngon nhất" (For me, pho is the most delicious). This is a very common opinion-introducing pattern.
