ہونا - To Be (Past)

فعل «ہونا» ماضی

ہونا - To Be (Past) in Urdu

Overview

The past tense forms of ہونا honā (to be) — تھا thā, تھی thī, تھے the, تھیں thīṅ — are essential CEFR A1 vocabulary that serve two critical functions: as the independent past copula ("was/were") and as the past auxiliary in compound tenses (past habitual, past continuous).

These four forms agree in gender and number with the subject, following the same masculine/feminine, singular/plural pattern as other Urdu verbs.

How It Works

Past Tense Forms

Gender/Number Form Transliteration Example
Masculine singular تھا thā وہ بیمار تھا (He was sick)
Feminine singular تھی thī وہ خوش تھی (She was happy)
Masculine plural / formal تھے the وہ تیار تھے (They were ready)
Feminine plural تھیں thīṅ وہ خوش تھیں (They-f were happy)

As Independent Copula

Subject + predicate + تھا/تھی/تھے:

  • میں طالب علم تھا۔ (I was a student — male)
  • وہ استاد تھیں۔ (She was a teacher — respectful)

As Past Auxiliary

Used in past habitual and past continuous:

  • وہ جاتا تھا (he used to go — habitual)
  • وہ جا رہا تھا (he was going — continuous)

Common Mistakes

Wrong Gender Agreement

  • Wrong: وہ (لڑکی) بیمار تھا۔
  • Right: وہ بیمار تھی۔
  • Why: تھا/تھی must agree with the subject's gender.

Confusing تھا with ہے

  • Wrong: کل موسم اچھا ہے۔ (for yesterday)
  • Right: کل موسم اچھا تھا۔
  • Why: Past states require past tense تھا, not present ہے.

Using تھے for Feminine Plural

  • Wrong: لڑکیاں خوش تھے۔
  • Right: لڑکیاں خوش تھیں۔
  • Why: Feminine plural requires تھیں, not تھے.

Usage Notes

The past forms of ہونا are among the most frequently occurring words in Urdu. They appear not only as independent past copula but as the auxiliary in past habitual (جاتا تھا) and past continuous (جا رہا تھا) tenses.

In respectful speech about elders, تھے is used even for singular referents: والد صاحب یہاں تھے (Father was here — respectful plural).

Practice Tips

  • Practice describing past states: how the weather was, where you were, who was present.
  • Drill all four forms by creating sentences with masculine singular, feminine singular, masculine plural, and feminine plural subjects.
  • Convert present sentences to past by changing ہے/ہیں to تھا/تھی/تھے/تھیں.
