Location and Direction Words in Urdu

Overview

Spatial vocabulary is essential at the CEFR A1 level for describing where things are and giving/understanding directions. Urdu has a rich set of location and direction words that often function as adverbs or combine with postpositions to express precise spatial relationships.

The core spatial words include یہاں yahāṅ (here), وہاں vahāṅ (there), اوپر ūpar (above), نیچے nīche (below), اندر andar (inside), باہر bāhar (outside), سامنے sāmne (in front), and پیچھے pīchhe (behind). Many of these combine with کے to form compound postpositions.

Common Mistakes

Using Location Words Without کے as Postpositions

  • Wrong: میز نیچے (meaning "under the table")
  • Right: میز کے نیچے
  • Why: When used as postpositions (after nouns), these words require کے.

Confusing یہاں/وہاں with یہ/وہ

  • Wrong: Using یہ for "here"
  • Right: یہاں for "here" (place), یہ for "this" (thing/person)
  • Why: یہاں/وہاں are locative adverbs; یہ/وہ are demonstrative pronouns.

Forgetting Oblique Case on Nouns Before Compound Postpositions

  • Wrong: کمرا کے اندر
  • Right: کمرے کے اندر
  • Why: Nouns take oblique form before any postposition, including compound ones.

Usage Notes

These words are essential for everyday navigation and description. They combine freely with verbs of motion (جانا, آنا) and state (ہونا) to create natural spatial descriptions.

In giving directions, Urdu speakers commonly use سیدھا sīdhā (straight), دائیں (right), and بائیں (left) with مڑنا muṛnā (to turn).

Practice Tips

  • Describe the layout of your room using location words: the bed is here, the table is there, the book is on the table.
  • Practice giving directions to familiar places using سیدھا, دائیں, بائیں.
  • Play "where is it?" games using objects and location vocabulary.
