Adjectives as Verbs in Thai

Overview
One of the most distinctive features of Thai grammar is that adjectives function as stative verbs. Unlike English, where you need a linking verb ("the food is delicious"), Thai simply places the adjective after the noun: อาหารอร่อย (aahaan aroi, literally "food delicious"). No copula is needed. This concept is fundamental at CEFR A1 level.
This means that Thai adjectives can be negated with ไม่ (mai) just like verbs, questioned with ไหม (mai) just like verbs, and modified with degree words like มาก (maak, "very") just like verbs. In noun phrases, adjectives follow the noun they modify: รถสีแดง (rot sii daeng, "red car").
Understanding this dual nature of adjectives eliminates the common error of inserting เป็น before every adjective. Thinking of Thai adjectives as "is-adjectives" (ร้อน means "is hot," not just "hot") helps learners produce natural Thai sentences.
How It Works
Adjective as Predicate (No Copula)
| Thai | Romanization | English |
|---|---|---|
| อาหารอร่อย | aahaan aroi | The food is delicious. |
| บ้านใหญ่ | baan yai | The house is big. |
| วันนี้ร้อน | wan nii ron | Today is hot. |
Adjective as Modifier (After Noun)
| Thai | Romanization | English |
|---|---|---|
| รถสีแดง | rot sii daeng | red car |
| บ้านใหญ่ | baan yai | big house |
| คนดี | khon dii | good person |
Degree Modification
| Degree Word | Position | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| มาก | After adj | ร้อนมาก | very hot |
| เกินไป | After adj | แพงเกินไป | too expensive |
| นิดหน่อย | After adj | เผ็ดนิดหน่อย | a little spicy |
| ค่อนข้าง | Before adj | ค่อนข้างดี | fairly good |

Common Mistakes
Inserting เป็น before adjectives
- Wrong: อาหารเป็นอร่อย
- Right: อาหารอร่อย
- Why: Adjectives in Thai are stative verbs and need no copula. This is the most common error among English speakers.
Placing adjectives before the noun
- Wrong: ใหญ่บ้าน (big house)
- Right: บ้านใหญ่
- Why: Thai adjectives follow the noun, the opposite of English word order.
Forgetting that adjectives can be negated directly
- Wrong: ไม่ใช่อร่อย (for "not delicious")
- Right: ไม่อร่อย
- Why: Since adjectives are verbs, they are negated with ไม่ directly, not with ไม่ใช่ (which negates nouns/identity).
Usage Notes
Adjective-verbs work the same across all registers. In formal Thai, additional degree words or literary synonyms may replace casual ones, but the structure remains identical. Color adjectives typically include สี (sii, "color") as a prefix: สีแดง (sii daeng, "red"). This is optional in casual speech but standard in formal contexts.
Practice Tips
- Describe everything around you. Point to objects and make simple sentences: โต๊ะใหญ่, กาแฟร้อน, ห้องสะอาด. This builds the adjective-as-verb pattern naturally.
- Practice negation and questions. For each adjective sentence, also practice the ไม่ and ไหม forms: อร่อย → ไม่อร่อย → อร่อยไหม.
- Stack degree words. Practice adding มาก, เกินไป, and นิดหน่อย to adjectives to build expressive range.
