Even if -아/어도 in Korean
양보 표현
Overview
The concessive ending -아/어도 means "even if" or "even though" at the CEFR B1 level. It expresses that the result remains the same regardless of the condition. Same vowel harmony as polite ending: -아도 after ㅏ/ㅗ, -어도 after others, 해도 for 하다. It differs from -지만 (but) in that -아/어도 specifically states the result is unaffected by the condition.
How It Works
| Stem | + 아/어도 | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 바쁘- | 바빠도 | even if busy |
| 비가 오- | 비가 와도 | even if it rains |
| 하- | 해도 | even if (one) does |
The pattern 아무리 + -아/어도 means "no matter how much": 아무리 먹어도 배고파요 (No matter how much I eat, I'm hungry).

Common Mistakes
Confusing -아/어도 with -(으)면
- Wrong: 비가 오면 갈 거예요 (meaning "even if it rains, I'll go")
- Right: 비가 와도 갈 거예요
- Why: -(으)면 means "if" (conditional); -아/어도 means "even if" (concessive). The meaning is different.
Using -아/어도 interchangeably with -지만
- Wrong: Always substituting one for the other
- Right: -지만 = but (simple contrast); -아/어도 = even if (the result is unaffected)
- Why: 비싸지만 좋아요 (expensive but good) vs. 비싸도 살 거예요 (even if expensive, will buy).
Usage Notes
-아/어도 되다 (it's okay even if = may/can) is a separate grammar point for permission. The 아무리...-아/어도 pattern is very expressive and commonly used for emphasis in both speech and writing. In casual speech, 해도 (even if doing) is one of the most common forms.
Practice Tips
- Create "determination" sentences: even if X, I will Y.
- Practice with 아무리: 아무리 어려워도 포기 안 할 거예요 (No matter how hard, I won't give up).
- Compare -지만, -(으)면, and -아/어도 with the same base sentence.
