ても (even if)

ても

ても (even if) in Japanese

Overview

The pattern ても (temo) expresses "even if" or "even though." It creates concessive clauses where the result in the main clause holds true regardless of the condition stated in the ても clause. This is a versatile A2 structure that lets you express determination, resilience, or surprise at an outcome.

You will encounter ても frequently in both spoken and written Japanese. It is the go-to way to say things like "even if it rains, I'll go" or "no matter how much I study, I can't remember." Once you master it, you can express much more nuanced thoughts about conditions and their (sometimes unexpected) outcomes.

How It Works

Formation

Word type Formation Example
Verb て-form + も 行っても (ittemo) — even if I go
い-adjective Drop い, add くても 高くても (takakutemo) — even if expensive
な-adjective Stem + でも 静かでも (shizuka demo) — even if quiet
Noun Noun + でも 雨でも (ame demo) — even if it's rain

Pattern

[condition] ても、[result that holds regardless]

The result clause is what matters — it does not change because of the condition.

With question words: "no matter..."

When combined with question words, ても creates powerful "no matter" expressions:

Pattern Meaning
何を食べても no matter what I eat
どこに行っても no matter where I go
いくら高くても no matter how expensive
何回聞いても no matter how many times I listen
誰に聞いても no matter who I ask

Examples in Context

Japanese English Note

忙しくても連絡してください。 Please contact me even if you're busy. い-adjective + くても
静かでも眠れません。 Even if it's quiet, I can't sleep. な-adjective + でも
休日でも仕事をします。 I work even on holidays. Noun + でも
どこに行っても人が多いです。 Wherever I go, there are lots of people. No matter where
いくら食べてもお腹がすきます。 No matter how much I eat, I get hungry. No matter how much

Common Mistakes

Using ても when the result actually does change

  • Wrong: 雨が降っても行きません。 (intending "if it rains, I won't go" — a normal conditional)
  • Right: 雨が降ったら行きません。 (normal conditional with たら)
  • Why: ても means the result holds regardless. If the condition actually changes your decision, use たら or ば instead.

Forgetting the adjective conjugation

  • Wrong: 高いても買います。
  • Right: 高くても買います。
  • Why: い-adjectives drop the い and add くても. You cannot simply attach ても to the dictionary form.

Confusing でも (particle) with ても (concessive)

  • Wrong: Thinking コーヒーでも飲みましょう means "even if it's coffee, let's drink it"
  • Right: It means "let's have coffee or something" (でも as a softening particle)
  • Why: でも after a noun can be the concessive "even if" or the particle meaning "or something." Context determines the meaning.

Usage Notes

ても is neutral in register and works in both casual and polite speech. The politeness is determined by the final verb, not the ても clause.

In casual speech, you may hear たって (tatte) as an alternative to ても, especially in Tokyo dialect: 食べたって太らない (even if I eat, I don't gain weight). This is informal but common.

The pattern どんなに...ても (no matter how much...) is especially useful for expressing extremes: どんなに頑張っても (no matter how hard I try).

Practice Tips

  • Practice making sentences about your own resilience or habits: "Even if I'm tired, I exercise." "Even if it's far, I walk." These personal sentences are easier to remember.
  • Drill the adjective forms separately: take five い-adjectives and five な-adjectives and convert them to the ても form.
  • Use the question word + ても pattern to express frustrations or observations: 何を食べてもおいしい (everything is delicious no matter what I eat).
