前/後 (before/after)

前・後

前/後 (before/after) in Japanese

Overview

The words 前 (mae, before) and 後 (ato, after) let you describe the temporal sequence of actions: what happens before something and what happens after something. These are essential A2 structures that appear in everyday conversation whenever you describe routines, plans, or sequences of events.

The patterns are straightforward but use different verb forms: 前 takes the dictionary form, while 後 takes the た-form. This distinction is logical — "before doing" refers to an action not yet done (dictionary form), while "after doing" refers to a completed action (た-form).

How It Works

Before: 前に (mae ni)

Verb (dictionary form) + 前に + [action] Noun + の前に + [action]

Pattern Example Meaning
Verb + 前に 食べる前に before eating
Noun + の前に 仕事の前に before work

After: 後で / 後に (ato de / ato ni)

Verb (た-form) + 後で/後に + [action] Noun + の後で/後に + [action]

Pattern Example Meaning
Verb + 後で 食べた後で after eating
Noun + の後で 仕事の後で after work

後で vs. 後に

Both are correct and largely interchangeable. 後で is slightly more common in casual speech; 後に can feel marginally more formal or precise. The difference is minimal at this level.

Common Mistakes

Using た-form before 前に

  • Wrong: 食べた前に手を洗います。
  • Right: 食べる前に手を洗います。
  • Why: 前に (before) refers to a time when the action has not yet happened, so it takes the dictionary form, not the past form.

Using dictionary form before 後で

  • Wrong: 食べる後で散歩します。
  • Right: 食べた後で散歩します。
  • Why: 後で (after) refers to a time when the action is already completed, so it takes the た-form.

Forgetting の with nouns

  • Wrong: 仕事前に
  • Right: 仕事の前に
  • Why: Nouns need の to connect to 前 or 後. Without it, the phrase sounds incomplete (though in very casual speech, の is sometimes dropped).

Confusing 前 (before) and 前 (in front of)

  • Wrong: Interpreting 駅の前に as "before the station" in a time sense
  • Right: 駅の前に can mean "in front of the station" (spatial) or be part of a time expression depending on context
  • Why: 前 has both temporal (before) and spatial (in front of) meanings. Context determines which.

Usage Notes

前に and 後で are versatile and work in both casual and polite contexts. The politeness is determined by the main verb at the end of the sentence, not by the 前/後 clause.

For giving advice or instructions, 前に is particularly common: 寝る前に歯を磨いてください (please brush your teeth before sleeping). Similarly, 後で works well for scheduling: 後で電話します (I'll call you later — note that 後で alone means "later").

Practice Tips

  • Describe your daily routine as a sequence of "before" and "after" events: 起きた後でシャワーを浴びます。シャワーを浴びた後で朝ごはんを食べます。
  • Practice the verb form distinction deliberately: take a verb and put it into both patterns. 食べる前に (before eating) and 食べた後で (after eating).
  • Use 前に to describe your preparation habits: 旅行の前に何をしますか? (What do you do before a trip?).
