Progressive with Stare in Italian
Stare + Gerundio
Overview
The Italian progressive construction stare + gerund corresponds to the English "-ing" form: "I am eating" = "Sto mangiando." It emphasizes that an action is happening right now, at this very moment. While Italian often uses the simple present tense where English uses the progressive ("Mangio" can mean both "I eat" and "I am eating"), the stare + gerund construction explicitly highlights that the action is in progress.
The gerund is formed by adding -ando to -ARE verb stems and -endo to -ERE and -IRE verb stems. Combined with different tenses of stare, you can express actions in progress in the present, past, and even future. "Sto studiando" (I'm studying), "Stavo dormendo" (I was sleeping), "Starò lavorando" (I'll be working / I'm probably working).
This construction is used more sparingly in Italian than the progressive is in English. It specifically means "right now, at this moment" and cannot be used for future plans or general states the way English uses "-ing." Understanding when to use it — and when not to — is key.

Stare + gerund in different tenses
| Tense of stare | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Present: sto | Sto mangiando. | I am eating (right now). |
| Imperfetto: stavo | Stavo dormendo. | I was sleeping (at that moment). |
| Future: starò | Starò lavorando alle tre. | I'll be working at three. / I'm probably working at three. |
| Passato prossimo: sono stato/a | Sono stato studiando tutto il giorno. | I've been studying all day. (rare) |
The most common combinations are sto + gerund (present) and stavo + gerund (past).

Pronoun placement
Pronouns can go before stare or attached to the gerund:

Common Mistakes
Using stare + gerund for future plans
- Wrong: Domani sto andando al cinema.
- Right: Domani vado al cinema.
- Why: Unlike English ("I'm going to the cinema tomorrow"), Italian does not use the progressive for future plans. Use the simple present or future tense for future actions.
Using stare + gerund for general/habitual actions
- Wrong: Sto vivendo a Roma. (meaning "I live in Rome" as a general fact)
- Right: Vivo a Roma.
- Why: The progressive in Italian is strictly for actions happening at this very moment. For general states or habits, use the simple present. (However, "Sto vivendo a Roma" could work if you mean "I'm currently living in Rome" — a temporary situation.)
Forgetting irregular gerund forms
- Wrong: Sto fando la spesa.
- Right: Sto facendo la spesa.
- Why: Fare, dire, and bere use their Latin stems for the gerund: facendo, dicendo, bevendo.
Using essere instead of stare
- Wrong: Sono mangiando.
- Right: Sto mangiando.
- Why: The progressive always uses stare, never essere. This is a fixed construction: stare + gerund.
Usage Notes
The stare + gerund construction is less common in Italian than the present continuous is in English. Italian speakers use the simple present tense far more broadly: "Cosa fai?" (What are you doing? / What do you do?) covers both habitual and current actions. The progressive explicitly means "right now, at this very moment" and is used when that emphasis matters.
A related construction is stare per + infinitive, meaning "to be about to": "Sto per uscire" (I'm about to go out). This is extremely useful and common in everyday Italian.
In northern Italy, the progressive is used somewhat less frequently than in central and southern Italy, where it aligns more closely with English usage. However, it is standard across all regions.
In literary and formal writing, the progressive is relatively rare. Narratives prefer the imperfetto for ongoing past actions: "Dormiva" (She was sleeping) rather than "Stava dormendo." The progressive is primarily a spoken construction.
Practice Tips
- Describe what's happening now: Look around and describe current actions: "Il gatto sta dormendo. Io sto studiando. Fuori sta piovendo." This drills the present progressive naturally.
- Practice stavo + gerund for storytelling: Describe interrupted actions: "Stavo leggendo quando è suonato il telefono. Stavo cucinando quando è arrivato Marco." This pairs perfectly with the passato prossimo.
- Compare with simple present: For each progressive sentence, create the simple present version and note the difference: "Sto mangiando" (right now) vs. "Mangio" (in general / right now). This sharpens your understanding of when to use each.
