Academic Hungarian in Hungarian
Tudományos Magyar Nyelv
Overview
Academic and scientific Hungarian represents a distinct register characterized by nominalized constructions, formal discourse markers, passive-like formations, and complex noun phrases. At the CEFR C2 level, command of this register is essential for university studies, professional writing, and understanding formal discourse in Hungarian.
Academic Hungarian differs from everyday speech in its heavy reliance on derived nouns (action nouns, abstract nouns), elaborate possessive chains, and formal connecting phrases. It favors noun-heavy sentences over verb-heavy ones, often packing complex ideas into dense nominal constructions that replace subordinate clauses.
This register has been heavily influenced by the 19th-century language reform movement (nyelvújítás) and continues to evolve with new terminology for modern academic disciplines.
How It Works
Nominalized Constructions
Academic style prefers nouns derived from verbs over the verbs themselves:
| Verbal (spoken) | Nominal (academic) | English |
|---|---|---|
| Megvizsgálták... | A vizsgálat során... | During the examination... |
| Megállapították, hogy... | Megállapítást nyert, hogy... | It has been established that... |
| Összegezzük... | Összegzésképpen... | In summary... |

| Mindezek alapján... | On the basis of all this... | deduction |
| A továbbiakban... | In what follows... | forward reference |
| Megjegyzendő, hogy... | It should be noted that... | parenthetical |
| Az alábbiakban... | In the following... | orientation |

Complex Noun Phrases
Academic Hungarian packs information into extended noun phrases:
A környezetszennyezés csökkentésére irányuló intézkedések hatékonyságának vizsgálata (The examination of the effectiveness of measures aimed at reducing environmental pollution)

Common Mistakes
Using spoken style in academic writing
- Wrong: Megnéztük és láttuk, hogy...
- Right: A vizsgálat eredményeképpen megállapítható, hogy...
- Why: Academic Hungarian prefers impersonal, nominalized constructions over first-person active voice.
Overusing passive-like constructions
- Wrong: Making every sentence passive-like
- Right: Balance nominalized and active constructions
- Why: Excessive use of kerül constructions and nominalizations makes prose heavy and unreadable.
Direct translation from English academic style
- Wrong: Ebben a cikkben, mi vizsgáljuk... (In this article, we examine...)
- Right: Jelen tanulmány célja... vizsgálata. (The aim of the present study is... the examination of.)
- Why: Hungarian academic style is more impersonal than English and favors different construction patterns.
Usage Notes
The -ra/-re kerül construction (e.g., alkalmazásra kerül — gets applied) is the standard formal alternative to passive voice, which Hungarian lacks. While some language purists criticize this as a Germanism, it is firmly established in academic and official Hungarian.
Hungarian academic style uses mi (we) or impersonal constructions rather than én (I), even for single-author papers.
Practice Tips
