Present Conditional in French

Conditionnel Présent

Overview

The present conditional, or conditionnel present, is one of the most versatile moods in French. It allows you to express polite requests, hypothetical situations, wishes, and reported speech. At the B1 level, mastering the conditional transforms your French from functional to sophisticated.

The great news is that if you have already learned the futur simple, you are halfway there. The conditional uses the exact same stems (including all the irregular ones) but pairs them with the imparfait endings. This elegant connection makes the conditional much easier to learn than it might first appear.

You already know the conditional from common phrases like je voudrais (I would like) and tu pourrais (could you). Now you will learn to apply it systematically across all verbs and situations.

How It Works

Formation

Future stem + imparfait endings

Subject Ending parler avoir etre
je -ais parlerais aurais serais
tu -ais parlerais aurais serais
il/elle/on -ait parlerait aurait serait
nous -ions parlerions aurions serions
vous -iez parleriez auriez seriez
ils/elles -aient parleraient auraient seraient

Main uses

Use Structure Example
Polite request Conditional of vouloir, pouvoir Je voudrais un cafe.
Hypothetical (present/future) Si + imparfait, conditional Si j'avais le temps, je voyagerais.
Reported speech (future in past) Il a dit que + conditional Il a dit qu'il viendrait.
Suggestion On pourrait / On devrait On pourrait sortir ce soir.
Unconfirmed information Conditional as journalistic hedging Le president serait malade.

Common Mistakes

Confusing conditional endings with futur simple endings

  • Wrong: Je parlera (future) instead of Je parlerais (conditional)
  • Right: Je parlerais for "I would speak"
  • Why: The future ends in -ai (no s), while the conditional ends in -ais. In speech they can sound similar, but in writing the distinction matters.

Using the conditional after si

  • Wrong: Si j'aurais le temps, je viendrais.
  • Right: Si j'avais le temps, je viendrais.
  • Why: After si, use the imparfait, never the conditional. The conditional goes only in the result clause.

Using the present tense for politeness instead of the conditional

  • Blunt: Je veux un cafe.
  • Polite: Je voudrais un cafe.
  • Why: In shops, restaurants, and formal situations, the conditional of vouloir and pouvoir is expected for politeness. Using the present tense can sound demanding.

Forgetting irregular stems carry over from futur simple

  • Wrong: Je allerais.
  • Right: J'irais.
  • Why: The conditional uses the same irregular stems as the futur simple. If you know j'irai (future), the conditional is j'irais.

Usage Notes

The conditional is essential for navigating register in French:

  • Politeness: The conditional softens any request. Pourriez-vous is noticeably more polite than Pouvez-vous, which is already more polite than Peux-tu.
  • Journalism: French media uses the conditional to report unconfirmed information: Le suspect serait en fuite (The suspect is reportedly on the run). This is called the conditionnel journalistique.
  • Advice: The conditional of devoir (tu devrais) is the standard way to give advice, equivalent to English "you should."
  • Spoken vs. written: The conditional is equally common in both spoken and written French, unlike the futur simple which is more literary.

Practice Tips

  1. Transform your daily polite interactions into French conditional phrases: ordering coffee (je voudrais), asking for help (pourriez-vous), making suggestions (on pourrait). These are the most frequent real-world uses.
  2. Practice the si + imparfait / conditional pattern by writing five "if" scenarios about your life: Si j'etais riche... Si j'habitais en France... Si je pouvais voyager...
  3. Take a paragraph of direct speech and convert it to indirect speech, applying the tense shift: present becomes imperfect, future becomes conditional.
