Purpose and Result Clauses in Persian
Overview
Purpose clauses explain why someone does something ("in order to"), while result clauses describe the outcome ("so...that"). At the B1 level, these structures let you express intentions, goals, and consequences — essential for moving beyond simple sentences to complex reasoning.
Purpose clauses use تا (tā) + subjunctive or برای اینکه (barāye inke) + subjunctive. Result clauses use آنقدر...که (ānqadr...ke, so much...that) or به طوری که (be tori ke, in such a way that). Both types are common in everyday speech and formal writing.
How It Works
Purpose clauses:
| Connector | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| تا + subjunctive | آمدم تا ببینمت | I came to see you |
| برای اینکه + subjunctive | برای اینکه یاد بگیرم | in order to learn |
| برای + infinitive/noun | برای یادگیری | for learning |
Result clauses:
| Connector | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|
| آنقدر...که | آنقدر خسته بود که خوابش برد | So tired that he fell asleep |
| به طوری که | به طوری که همه فهمیدند | In such a way that everyone understood |
| طوری که | طوری حرف زد که همه خندیدند | He spoke in a way that everyone laughed |

Common Mistakes
Using indicative instead of subjunctive after تا
- Wrong: آمدم تا میبینمت
- Right: آمدم تا ببینمت
- Why: Purpose clauses with تا always require the subjunctive.
Confusing تا (purpose) with تا (until)
- Wrong: Mixing the two meanings
- Right: تا + subjunctive = purpose; تا + indicative = until
- Why: The verb mood after تا determines the meaning: subjunctive = purpose, indicative = until.
Practice Tips
- Express your reasons for learning Persian: فارسی یاد میگیرم تا بتوانم... (I'm learning Persian so that I can...).
- Practice result expressions with آنقدر: آنقدر گرم بود که... (it was so hot that...).
- Convert purpose nouns to clauses: برای یادگیری → برای اینکه یاد بگیرم (for learning → in order to learn).
