Comparatives and Superlatives in Persian
صفت تفضیلی و عالی
Overview
Forming comparatives and superlatives in Persian is remarkably regular. To say "bigger," add تر (-tar) to the adjective: بزرگتر (bozorgtar). To say "biggest," add ترین (-tarin): بزرگترین (bozorgtarin). These suffixes work with almost every adjective, making the system easy to learn at the B1 level.
Comparisons use the preposition از (az, "than") where English uses "than": تهران بزرگتر از اصفهان است (Tehran is bigger than Isfahan). The superlative places the adjective before the noun with the ezafe: بزرگترین شهر (the biggest city). There are only a few irregular forms to memorize, most notably بهتر (better) and بدتر (worse).
How It Works
Comparative: adjective + تر (-tar) + از (az, than)
| Adjective | Comparative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| بزرگ (big) | بزرگتر (bigger) | تهران بزرگتر از اصفهان است. |
| کوچک (small) | کوچکتر (smaller) | این خانه کوچکتر است. |
| خوب (good) | بهتر (better) | Irregular |
| بد (bad) | بدتر (worse) | Irregular |
| زیاد (much) | بیشتر (more) | Irregular |
| کم (little) | کمتر (less) | Regular |
Superlative: adjective + ترین (-tarin)
| Adjective | Superlative | Example |
|---|---|---|
| بزرگ | بزرگترین | بزرگترین شهر ایران (the biggest city in Iran) |
| خوب | بهترین | بهترین دوست من (my best friend) |
| بد | بدترین | بدترین روز (the worst day) |
Key rules:
- Superlative adjective comes BEFORE the noun (unlike regular adjectives): بزرگترین شهر (not شهر بزرگترین)
- از connects the compared items: A + comparative + از + B
- "As...as" = به اندازهٔ (be andāze-ye): به اندازهٔ تو بلند (as tall as you)

Common Mistakes
Placing superlative after the noun
- Wrong: شهر بزرگترین
- Right: بزرگترین شهر
- Why: Unlike regular adjectives (which follow the noun), superlatives precede the noun.
Forgetting از in comparisons
- Wrong: تهران بزرگتر اصفهان
- Right: تهران بزرگتر از اصفهان
- Why: The comparison marker از (than) is required between the two items being compared.
Regularizing irregular comparatives
- Wrong: خوبتر (gooder)
- Right: بهتر (better)
- Why: خوب → بهتر and بد → بدتر are irregular and must be memorized.
Usage Notes
In colloquial speech, comparative forms are sometimes used without an explicit comparison to mean "fairly" or "rather": بزرگتره (it's fairly big), بهتره بریم (it would be better if we go). This softening use is common in everyday recommendations and opinions.
Practice Tips
- Compare things around you: این اتاق بزرگتر از آن اتاق است (this room is bigger than that room). Practice with different adjectives.
- Memorize the three irregular forms: خوب→بهتر→بهترین, بد→بدتر→بدترین, زیاد→بیشتر→بیشترین.
- Practice superlatives with geography and culture: بزرگترین شهر (biggest city), معروفترین شاعر (most famous poet), قدیمیترین مسجد (oldest mosque).
