Sequence of Tenses in Catalan
Concordança de Temps Verbals
Overview
The sequence of tenses (concordança de temps) describes how the tense of the main clause governs the tense of the subordinate clause. At the C1 level, understanding this system is essential for producing complex, grammatically correct sentences in both speech and writing.
The basic principle is simple: when the main verb is in the present, the subordinate verb uses present-tense forms; when the main verb is in the past, the subordinate verb shifts to past-tense forms. This applies to all subordinate clauses with the subjunctive and to reported speech constructions.
Mastering tense sequence means your complex sentences flow naturally, with tenses agreeing logically across clauses.
How It Works
Main Clause Present → Subordinate Present/Perfect Subjunctive
| Main clause | Subordinate clause | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vull que... | present subjunctive | Vull que ho facis. (I want you to do it.) |
| Espero que... | present subjunctive | Espero que vingui. (I hope he/she comes.) |
| Dubto que... | present subjunctive | Dubto que ho sàpiga. (I doubt he/she knows.) |
| Espero que... | perfect subjunctive | Espero que hagi anat bé. (I hope it went well.) |
Main Clause Past → Subordinate Imperfect/Pluperfect Subjunctive
| Main clause | Subordinate clause | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Volia que... | imperfect subjunctive | Volia que ho fessis. (I wanted you to do it.) |
| Esperava que... | imperfect subjunctive | Esperava que vingués. (I expected him/her to come.) |
| Dubtava que... | imperfect subjunctive | Dubtava que ho sabés. (I doubted he/she knew.) |
| Va demanar que... | imperfect subjunctive | Li va demanar que m'ajudés. (He asked him/her to help me.) |
Future and Conditional Sequences
| Main clause | Subordinate | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dirà que... | future/present | Dirà que vindran. (He'll say they'll come.) |
| Diria que... | conditional | Diria que no ho sap. (I'd say he doesn't know.) |
| Va dir que... | conditional | Va dir que vindria. (He said he would come.) |

Common Mistakes
Using present subjunctive after a past main verb
- Wrong: Volia que vingui.
- Right: Volia que vingués.
- Why: A past main verb requires the imperfect subjunctive in the subordinate clause, not the present subjunctive.
Using imperfect subjunctive after a present main verb
- Wrong: Vull que vingués.
- Right: Vull que vingui.
- Why: A present main verb requires the present subjunctive. The imperfect subjunctive is only used when the main verb is in the past.
Forgetting sequence in indirect speech
- Direct: "Vindré demà." → Indirect: Va dir que vindria l'endemà.
- Wrong: Va dir que vindrà demà.
- Why: When the reporting verb is past, the future shifts to conditional and time references shift accordingly.
Usage Notes
The sequence of tenses in Catalan is more consistently applied in formal and written language than in casual speech. In informal spoken Catalan, speakers sometimes use the present subjunctive after a past main verb, especially when the subordinate action is still relevant: Va dir que vingui demà (He said [for me] to come tomorrow — still relevant). While not strictly standard, this is common and understandable.
Practice Tips
- Take five sentences with present main verbs and convert them to past: "Vull que vinguis" → "Volia que vinguessis." Do this until the pattern becomes automatic.
- Practice reported speech transformation: take direct quotes and report them in the past, applying all the necessary shifts.
- Create chains of tense agreement: "Vull que diguis que vingui" (present chain) → "Volia que diguessis que vingués" (past chain).
