Modal Verbs: Poder, Voler, Saber in Catalan

Verbs Modals: Poder, Voler, Saber

This article is part of the Catalan grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

Modal verbs express ability, desire, and knowledge. At the A1 level, three Catalan modal verbs are essential: poder (can, to be able to), voler (to want), and saber (to know how to). These verbs are used with an infinitive to create two-verb phrases: Puc parlar (I can speak), Vull aprendre (I want to learn), Sé cuinar (I know how to cook).

All three are irregular in the present tense, so their forms must be memorized individually. They are among the most frequently used verbs in any conversation, appearing in questions, requests, offers, and descriptions of abilities.

The distinction between poder and saber is important: poder expresses possibility or permission (can/may), while saber expresses learned skill or knowledge (know how to). Puc nadar means "I can swim" (I am physically able to / I have permission), while Sé nadar means "I know how to swim" (I have learned the skill).

Common Mistakes

Confusing "poder" and "saber"

  • Wrong: Puc nadar molt bé. (when meaning you have the skill)
  • Right: Sé nadar molt bé.
  • Why: "Poder" is for ability/permission in the moment; "saber" is for learned skills. "Puc nadar" implies "I am currently able to swim (conditions allow it)."

Forgetting the infinitive after the modal

  • Wrong: Vull català.
  • Right: Vull aprendre català. or Vull un cafè. (noun, not verb)
  • Why: Modal verbs need an infinitive (or a noun). "Vull català" is incomplete — you need to specify what you want to do with it.

Wrong pronoun placement

  • Both correct: Puc ajudar-te. and Et puc ajudar.
  • Why: With modal + infinitive, weak pronouns can go before the modal OR attached to the infinitive. Both are correct, but before the modal is more common in speech.

Practice Tips

  1. Make three columns (puc/vull/sé) and list five things in each: "Puc parlar anglès. Vull viatjar a Japó. Sé cuinar pasta."
  2. Practice polite requests with "poder": "Pots ajudar-me?" "Pot repetir?" "Podeu parlar més a poc a poc?"
  3. Distinguish poder vs. saber with a quiz: for each activity (swim, drive, cook, park here, enter), decide which modal is appropriate.
