Ser and Estar

Ser i Estar

Ser and Estar in Catalan

Overview

Catalan has two verbs that both translate as "to be" in English: ser and estar. Understanding when to use each one is a fundamental challenge at the A1 level, but the basic rules are clear enough to get you started.

Ser is used for identity, professions, origin, essential characteristics, and telling the time. Think of it as describing what something is at its core. Estar is used for locations, temporary states, and conditions. Think of it as describing where something is or how something is right now.

Both verbs are highly irregular, so their conjugations must be memorized. The good news is that you will use them so frequently that their forms will quickly become second nature. Almost every conversation requires one or both of these verbs.

Common Mistakes

Using estar for professions

  • Wrong: Estic professor.
  • Right: Sóc professor.
  • Why: Professions are permanent identity features — use ser.

Using ser for location

  • Wrong: El llibre és a la taula.
  • Right: El llibre està a la taula.
  • Why: Physical location of objects uses estar. (Exception: events use ser — La festa és aquí.)

Confusing temporary vs. permanent qualities

  • Wrong: Sóc content. (unless you mean "I am a happy person by nature")
  • Right: Estic content. (I am happy right now.)
  • Why: Temporary emotions and states use estar; inherent personality traits use ser.

Practice Tips

  1. Create two columns labeled "ser" and "estar" and sort everyday sentences into the right column. Start with: your name, your nationality, where you are right now, how you feel, what time it is, and your profession.
  2. Practice the full conjugation of both verbs aloud every day for a week. These forms appear so frequently that fluent recall is essential.
  3. Listen to Catalan conversations and try to catch each use of ser or estar, then decide which rule it follows (identity, location, state, etc.).
