Daily Routine in Catalan

Rutina Diària

This article is part of the Catalan grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.

Overview

Describing your daily routine is one of the most practical topics at the A1 level. It combines time expressions, reflexive verbs, and everyday vocabulary into a pattern you will use constantly. In Catalan, many daily activities are expressed with reflexive verbs, which means the action involves the subject doing something to or for themselves.

The key verbs for daily routines include llevar-se (to get up), dutxar-se (to shower), vestir-se (to get dressed), esmorzar (to have breakfast), dinar (to have lunch), sopar (to have dinner), and anar a dormir (to go to sleep). Notice that meal verbs in Catalan are standalone verbs, not phrases like English "to have breakfast."

Catalan meal times tend to follow the Mediterranean pattern: breakfast around 7-9 AM, lunch (the main meal) around 1-3 PM, and dinner around 8:30-10 PM. Understanding these cultural patterns helps you use the vocabulary naturally.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the reflexive pronoun

  • Wrong: Llevo a les set.
  • Right: Em llevo a les set.
  • Why: "Llevar-se" is reflexive — you need the pronoun "em" (myself) before the verb.

Using "tenir" for meals

  • Wrong: Tinc esmorzar a les vuit.
  • Right: Esmorzo a les vuit.
  • Why: Catalan uses dedicated verbs for meals (esmorzar, dinar, sopar), not "to have" + noun.

Wrong word order with reflexive pronouns and time

  • Wrong: A les set em llevo. (not wrong, but uncommon as topic)
  • Natural: Em llevo a les set. or Cada dia em llevo a les set.
  • Why: The time expression usually comes after the verb in routine descriptions.

Practice Tips

  1. Write out your entire daily routine from waking to sleeping, using Catalan verbs and time expressions. Read it aloud daily.
  2. Practice reflexive verbs by miming the actions while saying them: "Em llevo, em dutxo, em vesteixo, em rento les mans."
  3. Describe a friend's or family member's routine in the third person: "La meva germana es lleva a les sis. Esmorza a les set..."
