Advanced Relative Clauses in Catalan

Overview

At the B2 level, you expand your relative clause toolkit to include complex constructions with prepositions, the full el qual system, and non-restrictive (explanatory) relative clauses. These structures are essential for formal writing, academic texts, and sophisticated expression.

Advanced relative clauses in Catalan use the full range of relative pronouns: que (basic), qui (for people after prepositions), el qual / la qual / els quals / les quals (formal, agrees with antecedent), and què (after prepositions for things). Understanding when to use each form — and the subtle differences between them — marks B2 proficiency.

Non-restrictive relative clauses, set off by commas, add extra information: Barcelona, que és la capital, és molt gran (Barcelona, which is the capital, is very big). These are common in both speech and writing.

How It Works

Relative Pronoun System

Pronoun Use Example
que Subject/object (no preposition) L'home que veig.
qui After preposition, for people L'home amb qui parlo.
què After preposition, for things La casa en què visc.
on Place La ciutat on vaig néixer.

Non-Restrictive (Explanatory) Clauses

Catalan English
Barcelona, que és la capital, és gran. Barcelona, which is the capital, is big.
My brother, who lives in Girona, will come tomorrow.

Complex Preposition + Relative Patterns

Pattern Example
en + què La casa en què vaig néixer. (The house in which I was born.)
(The reason for which I left.)
(The person about whom I'm telling you.)
(The friend thanks to whom I achieved it.)

Common Mistakes

Using "que" after a preposition

  • Wrong: La casa en que visc.
  • Right: La casa en què visc.
  • Why: After a preposition, use "què" (with accent) for things, not bare "que."

Forgetting agreement with "el qual"

  • Why: "El qual" must agree with its antecedent in gender and number.

Omitting commas in non-restrictive clauses

(The man who works here is nice — defining which man)
(Pere, who works here, is nice — extra info)
  • Why: The comma changes meaning: without it, the clause identifies; with it, it adds information.

Usage Notes

In everyday speech, Catalan speakers often avoid complex relative clauses by restructuring: La casa on visc (simpler) instead of La casa en la qual visc (more formal). The formal el qual forms are primarily written. However, for B2 proficiency and beyond, you need to understand and produce both levels.

Practice Tips

  2. Practice the comma distinction: write pairs of restrictive and non-restrictive clauses about the same person or thing.
  3. Read formal Catalan texts and note which relative pronoun forms they use and why.
