Negation 不/没 in Chinese
否定词
Overview
Chinese has two main negation words: 不 (bù) and 没 (méi). They are not interchangeable -- each covers different semantic territory. Understanding when to use 不 versus 没 is one of the most important distinctions at the A1 level and continues to be refined as proficiency grows.
At the CEFR A1 level, the core rule is: 不 negates habits, willingness, future actions, and adjectives, while 没 negates completed past actions and the verb 有 (yǒu, to have). You will never see 不有 -- it is always 没有.
A useful mnemonic: 不 is about "won't" or "don't" (choice, habit, state), while 没 is about "didn't" or "hasn't" (fact, occurrence). This distinction reflects how Chinese handles the concept of tense without conjugating verbs.
How It Works
| Negation | Pinyin | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 不 | bù | Habits and routines | 我不喝酒 (I don't drink alcohol) |
| 不 | bù | States and adjectives | 不好 (not good), 不大 (not big) |
| 不 | bù | Future/willingness | 明天我不去 (I won't go tomorrow) |
| 不 | bù | Modal verbs | 不会, 不能, 不想 |
| 没(有) | méi(yǒu) | Past actions | 我没去 (I didn't go) |
| 没(有) | méi(yǒu) | Negating 有 | 我没有钱 (I don't have money) |
| 没(有) | méi(yǒu) | Uncompleted actions | 他没来 (He hasn't come) |
Tone sandhi: 不 is normally 4th tone (bù), but changes to 2nd tone (bú) before another 4th tone: 不是 → bú shì.
Important: 没 removes 了 from sentences. You say 我吃了 (I ate) but 我没吃 (I didn't eat), NOT 我没吃了.

Common Mistakes
Using 不 to negate past actions
- Wrong: 我昨天不去。(I yesterday not go.)
- Right: 我昨天没去。(I didn't go yesterday.)
- Why: Completed past actions are negated with 没, not 不. 不 in this context would mean "I refuse to go" or a habitual statement.
Saying 不有 instead of 没有
- Wrong: 我不有钱。
- Right: 我没有钱。(I don't have money.)
- Why: 有 is the only verb that can NEVER be negated with 不. Its negation is always 没有.
Keeping 了 with 没
- Wrong: 我没吃了饭。
- Right: 我没吃饭。(I didn't eat.)
- Why: 没 already indicates that the action did not happen, so the completion marker 了 is removed.
Confusing habit and past
- Wrong: 我没喝酒 when meaning "I don't drink (as a habit)"
- Right: 我不喝酒 (habitual) vs. 我没喝酒 (I didn't drink [this time])
- Why: Habitual negation uses 不; specific past negation uses 没.
Practice Tips
- When choosing between 不 and 没, ask: "Am I talking about a habit/state/future, or about something that did/didn't happen?" If the former, use 不; if the latter, use 没.
- Practice converting positive sentences to negative: take 我吃了 (I ate) and make it 我没吃 (I didn't eat); take 他很忙 (He is busy) and make it 他不忙 (He is not busy).
- Pay special attention to the 不 tone sandhi rule. Practice saying 不是 (bú shì), 不对 (bú duì), 不去 (bú qù) until the tone change becomes natural.
