Money and Shopping in Chinese
钱和购物
Overview
Money and shopping vocabulary (钱和购物, qián hé gòuwù) is among the most immediately practical Chinese you can learn. China's currency is the 人民币 (rénmínbì, RMB), with the basic unit 元 (yuán) in formal contexts or 块 (kuài) in casual speech. Shopping phrases like 多少钱 (how much) and 太贵了 (too expensive) are essential for daily transactions.
At the CEFR A1 level, money and shopping provide natural practice for numbers, measure words, and basic sentences. The currency system has three tiers: 元/块 (yuan), 角/毛 (jiǎo/máo, 1/10 yuan), and 分 (fēn, 1/100 yuan), though 分 is rarely used in modern transactions.
Bargaining (讨价还价) is common in markets and small shops, making phrases like 便宜一点 (make it cheaper) practically useful.

Common Mistakes
Using 元 in casual speech
- Wrong: Saying 三十五元 in a market (overly formal)
- Right: 三十五块(钱) in casual contexts; 三十五元 in formal writing
- Why: 块 is the standard spoken form; 元 is for written/formal contexts.
Forgetting 两 before 块
- Wrong: 二块钱 (two yuan)
- Right: 两块钱 (two yuan)
- Why: Before measure words (including 块), use 两 instead of 二.
Not dropping trailing units
- Wrong: Always saying every unit: 两块五毛零分
- Right: 两块五 (2.5 yuan -- drop 毛 when implied)
- Why: In spoken Chinese, the last unit can often be dropped when the meaning is clear.
Practice Tips
- Practice asking prices in imaginary shopping scenarios: 这个多少钱?那个呢?
- Memorize the key bargaining phrases as a set: 太贵了, 便宜一点, 最低多少?
- Practice reading prices aloud: 15.50 = 十五块五, 100 = 一百块.
