在 for Progressive in Chinese
正在进行
Overview
The progressive aspect in Chinese is expressed by placing 在 (zài) or 正在 (zhèngzài) before the verb, similar to English "-ing" constructions. The sentence often ends with the particle 呢 (ne) for emphasis. This pattern indicates that an action is happening right now: 我在吃饭 (I am eating), 他正在学习呢 (He is studying right now).
At the CEFR A2 level, this is important for describing current activities. The pattern is flexible: you can use 在, 正在, or just 呢, or various combinations. All convey that something is in progress at the moment of speaking.
The progressive 在 should not be confused with the locative 在 (在学校, at school). Context and position in the sentence make the distinction clear: progressive 在 comes directly before a verb, while locative 在 comes before a place.

Common Mistakes
Confusing progressive 在 with locative 在
- Wrong: Thinking 我在吃饭 means "I eat at..." (incomplete location)
- Right: 我在吃饭 = I am eating (progressive). 我在家吃饭 = I eat at home (locative + verb).
- Why: When 在 directly precedes a verb with no place noun, it is progressive. When it precedes a place, it is locative.
Using 在 for habitual actions
- Wrong: 我在每天跑步。(I am running every day.)
- Right: 我每天跑步。(I run every day.) -- no progressive needed
- Why: The progressive marks an action happening at this moment, not a habitual action.
Overusing 正在
- Wrong: Always using 正在 for any ongoing action
- Right: 在 alone or just 呢 is often sufficient; 正在 emphasizes "right this moment"
- Why: 正在 is the strongest form; simple 在 or 呢 is more common in casual speech.
Practice Tips
- Practice describing what people around you are doing right now: 他在看手机, 她在喝水, 他们在说话. This builds real-time description skills.
- Try all three patterns with the same verb to feel the difference: 他看书 (He reads), 他在看书 (He is reading), 他正在看书呢 (He is reading right now).
- Use the phone/messaging context: when someone calls and you're busy, practice saying 我正在...呢 (I'm in the middle of...).
