Comparison with 比 in Chinese
比较句
Overview
The primary comparative structure in Chinese uses 比 (bǐ): A 比 B + adjective, meaning "A is more [adj] than B." Unlike English, which adds "-er" or "more" before the adjective, Chinese places the comparison marker 比 between the two items and leaves the adjective in its base form. Crucially, 很 is NOT used in 比 comparisons.
At the CEFR A2 level, the 比 construction is essential for making comparisons in daily conversation -- comparing prices, sizes, distances, and qualities. The structure is fixed and regular, making it relatively easy to learn, but several common pitfalls exist around degree words and negation.
For saying "A is not as [adj] as B," the pattern 没有 (méiyǒu) is used: A 没有 B + adjective. This is the standard negative comparison.
How It Works
Basic comparison: A 比 B + Adj
| Structure | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A 比 B + Adj | 他比我高。 | He is taller than me. |
| A 比 B + Adj + degree | 这个比那个贵一点儿。 | This is a bit more expensive. |
| A 比 B + Adj + 多了/得多 | 北京比上海大多了。 | Beijing is much bigger than Shanghai. |
Degree words in 比 sentences
| Degree | Pattern | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A little | 比...Adj + 一点儿 | a little more |
| Much | 比...Adj + 多了 / 得多 | much more |
| Even more | 比...更 + Adj | even more |
Negative comparison: A 没有 B + Adj
| Chinese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 我没有他高。 | I am not as tall as him. |
| 今天没有昨天冷。 | Today is not as cold as yesterday. |
Important: Do NOT use 很 in 比 comparisons: 他比我很高 is WRONG.

Common Mistakes
Using 很 in 比 sentences
- Wrong: 他比我很高。
- Right: 他比我高。(He is taller than me.)
- Why: In 比 comparisons, 很 is not allowed. The comparison itself implies "more," so no degree word is needed for the basic form.
Using 不比 as simple negation
- Wrong: Thinking 他不比我高 means "He is not taller than me"
- Right: 他不比我高 actually means "He is not necessarily taller" (implies they may be similar). Use 他没有我高 for "He is not as tall as me."
- Why: 不比 negates the comparison itself (they are similar), while 没有 creates a clear "not as...as" comparison.
Forgetting degree words for emphasis
- Wrong: 这个比那个贵很多。
- Right: 这个比那个贵多了。or 这个比那个贵得多。
- Why: In 比 comparisons, "much more" is expressed with 多了 or 得多, not 很多.
Practice Tips
- Compare things around you using 比: prices, sizes, temperatures, distances. This builds natural comparison habits.
- Practice the degree spectrum: 贵一点儿 (a bit more expensive) → 贵多了 (much more expensive) → 贵得多 (way more expensive).
- Master both positive (比) and negative (没有) comparisons as a pair for flexible expression.
