Abstract Grammar Patterns in Chinese
Overview
Abstract grammar patterns (抽象语法, chōuxiàng yǔfǎ) are advanced constructions used primarily in formal writing and academic Chinese. Key patterns include 以...为 (take...as), 有所 (have some), 加以 (apply/give), and 之所以...是因为 (the reason why...is because). These patterns combine classical elements with modern usage and are hallmarks of educated, formal Chinese.
At the CEFR C1 level, these patterns are essential for academic reading and writing, formal presentations, and professional documents. They provide precise, formal alternatives to simpler conversational expressions.
How It Works
| Pattern | Pinyin | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| 以...为 | yǐ...wéi | take...as / regard as | 以北京为中心 (with Beijing as center) |
| 有所 + V | yǒu suǒ + V | have some (V) | 有所改善 (has improved somewhat) |
| 加以 + V | jiāyǐ + V | apply/give (action) | 加以注意 (pay attention to) |
| 之所以...是因为 | zhī suǒyǐ...shì yīnwèi | the reason...is because | 之所以成功,是因为努力 |
| 对...而言 | duì...ér yán | for...speaking | 对我而言 (for me) |
| 就...而言 | jiù...ér yán | in terms of | 就质量而言 (in terms of quality) |
有所 pattern (formally acknowledging partial change)
| Chinese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 有所改善 | has improved somewhat |
| 有所提高 | has increased somewhat |
| 有所不同 | somewhat different |
| 有所下降 | has decreased somewhat |

Common Mistakes
Using abstract patterns in casual speech
- Wrong: 我之所以迟到,是因为堵车了。(overly formal for casual explanation)
- Right: 我迟到是因为堵车了。(casual) or use 之所以 only in formal/written contexts
- Why: These patterns signal formal register; using them casually sounds stilted.
Misusing 有所 for complete changes
- Wrong: 有所完成 (has somewhat completed -- awkward)
- Right: 有所改善, 有所提高 (works with gradual changes, not binary completion)
- Why: 有所 implies partial or gradual change, not complete transformation.
Confusing 加以 direction
- Wrong: Using 加以 with any verb
- Right: 加以 works with a limited set of verbs: 注意, 改进, 解决, 考虑, 分析
- Why: 加以 is a formal intensifier that collocates with specific verbs.
Practice Tips
- Practice rewriting casual sentences in formal style using these patterns for academic writing.
- Memorize common 有所 + verb combinations as vocabulary units.
- Use 以...为 when describing organizational structures, goals, or frameworks.
