Classical Chinese Elements in Mandarin Chinese
文言成分
This article is part of the Chinese grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
In Brief
Modern Mandarin retains short words from Classical Chinese, especially 之, 于, 以, 而, and 所. They often correspond loosely to modern forms such as 的, 在/对, 用, “and/but,” and “what is…,” but they cannot be exchanged mechanically. At C1, learn them as parts of recurring formal patterns and fixed expressions rather than as decorative substitutes for everyday words.
Overview
文言文 (wényánwén) is the compact written language used in China for centuries before modern written Chinese became standard. Modern Mandarin, or 现代汉语, has a different grammar, but it preserves many classical elements in formal prose, news reports, academic and administrative writing, titles, slogans, names, and 成语 (chéngyǔ, fixed idioms, often four characters long).
These elements matter because a short character can express a relationship that conversational Mandarin would spell out more fully. 以上所述, for example, means “what is stated above”; 高于预期 means “higher than expected”; 予以处理 means “take action on it” or “handle it.” Recognising the pattern is more reliable than translating each character separately.
For an English-speaking learner, English words such as “of,” “at,” “with,” “and,” and “that which” are useful first approximations, but none is a complete equivalent. The same character may serve several related functions, while its modern use is restricted by register and convention. The goal is not to imitate ancient prose. It is to read modern formal Chinese confidently and use established patterns without making ordinary writing sound artificially literary.
How It Works
A function word is a short word whose main job is to show a grammatical relationship rather than name a person, object, or action. The five elements here often behave as function words, but many modern examples are lexicalised: that means the whole expression has become a conventional vocabulary item and should be learned as a unit.
| Element | Useful first approximation | Main modern environments | Typical forms |
|---|---|---|---|
| 之 | 的; “of”; sometimes “it” | Titles, set phrases, fractions, formal modifier links | 成功之路, 百分之十, 总而言之 |
| 于 | 在, 对, 向, 比 | Formal relations of place, target, source, or comparison; compounds | 位于, 用于, 高于, 关于 |
| 以 | 用, 凭, “by means of” | Means, basis, purpose, formal verb patterns | 予以处理, 以事实为依据, 以便 |
| 而 | “and,” “but,” “while,” “thereby” | Links clauses or qualities; fixed words and idioms | 从而, 然而, 半途而废 |
| 所 | “what/that which…” | Makes a verb phrase refer to its object or content; fixed patterns | 所说的, 以上所述, 有所改善 |
The approximations show where to begin, not what to substitute. 之 is not a formal replacement for every 的, and 而 does not replace every 和.
之: linking, proportions, and fixed endings
In a formal noun phrase, A之B can resemble A的B, with A modifying B:
- 成功之路 — the road to success
- 意料之外 — beyond expectations
- 两者之间 — between the two
This pattern is concise and often appears in titles, slogans, abstract prose, and established expressions. Everyday possession normally uses 的: 我的朋友, not 我之朋友. Personal A之B combinations can sound archaic unless they belong to a deliberate literary style.
之 is also required in the standard fraction and percentage pattern:
whole/unit + 之 + number
- 三分之一 — one third
- 百分之二十 — twenty percent
Here 之 is not optional and should not be changed to 的. In idioms, it may historically act like a pronoun, roughly “it” or “this,” but the safest modern approach is to learn the entire phrase: 总而言之 “in summary,” 久而久之 “as time goes by,” and 取而代之 “replace it.”
于: marking a formal relationship
于 is a formal preposition (a relation word, like English “at,” “to,” or “than”). Its interpretation depends strongly on the word before it.
| Relationship | Pattern | Example | Natural meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| location | 位于 + place | 位于市中心 | be located in the city centre |
| use or target | 用于 + purpose | 用于教学 | be used for teaching |
| commitment/target | 致力于 + activity | 致力于研究 | be committed to research |
| comparison | 高于/低于 + standard | 低于平均水平 | below the average level |
| source | 源于 + source | 源于实践 | originate in practice |
| topic | 关于 + topic | 关于安全问题 | concerning safety issues |
Many of these are best treated as complete verbs or prepositions: 位于, 属于, 由于, 关于, 用于, 对于. Do not assume that removing 于 leaves the same meaning. In free-standing literary use, 于 has a wider range, but modern formal writing usually favours these stable combinations.
以: means, basis, purpose, and formal handling
When 以 introduces a means or basis, it can often be understood as “using,” “on the basis of,” or “taking … as”:
- 以事实为依据 — take facts as the basis
- 以书面形式通知 — notify in written form
- 以每小时八十公里的速度行驶 — travel at 80 kilometres per hour
A particularly useful frame is:
以 + A + 为 + B = take/use A as B
- 以质量为重点 — make quality the priority
- 以此为例 — take this as an example
In 以便, 以免, and 以确保, 以 introduces a purpose or intended result: “so that,” “in order to,” or “so as to avoid.” These are formal written connectors.
Administrative prose also uses 予以 + action noun/verb and 加以 + verb:
- 予以批准 — grant approval
- 予以处理 — take appropriate action / handle it
- 加以说明 — provide an explanation
- 加以改进 — make improvements
Learn 予以 and 加以 as whole patterns. Their meaning is not simply obtained by replacing 以 with 用.
而: connecting ideas with a logical relationship
而 links words or clauses, but the relationship comes from context. It may add information, mark contrast, show a result, or connect an action with its manner.
- contrast: 价格不高,而质量很好。 — The price is not high, while the quality is good.
- correction: 不是拒绝,而是需要更多时间。 — It is not a refusal; rather, more time is needed.
- result: 采用新方法,从而提高效率。 — Adopt a new method, thereby improving efficiency.
- idiomatic relation: 不劳而获 — gain without working
Unlike 和, 而 generally does not simply join two concrete nouns. Say 老师和学生, not 老师而学生. It joins descriptions, actions, or propositions and asks the reader to infer a logical connection.
Some common words containing it are 然而 “however,” 因而 “therefore,” 从而 “thereby,” and 而且 “moreover.” In 总而言之, the whole phrase means “in short” or “all things considered.”
所: turning an action into “what is…”
所 + verb forms a noun-like unit: it refers to the person, thing, or content affected by the action. A noun-like unit is a phrase that can fill the place normally occupied by a noun.
- 我所知道的 — what I know
- 他所提出的问题 — the question(s) he raised
- 以上所述 — what is stated above
- 所需材料 — the materials required
The common expanded pattern is:
subject + 所 + verb + 的 + noun
In 我们所面临的挑战, “the challenges we face,” 我们 is the doer, 面临 is the action, and 挑战 is what the action relates to. 所 highlights the verb-object relationship and gives the phrase a formal tone. Everyday Mandarin often drops 所: 我们面临的挑战 is fully natural and usually less formal.
Do not confuse this pattern with 所有 “all” or “to possess,” or with 所以 “therefore.” Historically related pieces may be visible, but these are modern words with their own grammar.

Common Mistakes
Replacing every 的 with 之
- Wrong: 这是我之手机。
- Right: 这是我的手机。
- Why: Ordinary possession uses 的. 之 is natural in established expressions, formal abstract noun phrases, titles, and special patterns, not as an automatic “more advanced” version of 的.
Treating 于 as one fixed English preposition
- Wrong: interpreting 高于标准 as “at the standard.”
- Right: 高于标准 = “higher than the standard.”
- Why: 于 can mark location, target, source, or comparison. Read the whole combination, such as 位于, 用于, or 高于.
Using 以 where conversational Chinese needs 用
- Wrong: 我以筷子吃饭。 in ordinary conversation
- Right: 我用筷子吃饭。
- Why: A free-standing 以 meaning “with” is literary or highly formal. Everyday instrumental sentences normally use 用. Use 以 confidently in established frames such as 以A为B and 以…形式.
Using 而 to join ordinary nouns
- Wrong: 老师而学生都参加了。
- Right: 老师和学生都参加了。
- Why: 而 links actions, qualities, or clauses through contrast, addition, manner, or result. 和 is the normal coordinator for “teacher and students.”
Adding 所 without a suitable verb phrase
- Wrong: 这是我所的书。
- Right: 这是我的书。 / 这是我所写的书。
- Why: 所 normally comes before a verb, as in 所写, 所见, or 所需要. It does not replace possessive 的 by itself.
Doubling the object after 所
- Wrong: 这是我所看到这部电影。
- Right: 这是我所看到的电影。
- Why: In 我所看到的电影, the noun 电影 is the thing seen. The verb phrase needs 的 before that following noun; do not place the object directly after 看到 and then repeat the relationship.
Usage Notes
These elements differ greatly in how “classical” they feel. 关于, 由于, 所以, 而且, 所有, and percentages with 之 are completely normal modern Mandarin. Forms such as 位于, 用于, 高于, and 所需 are especially common in informative and professional writing. By contrast, freely replacing modern grammar words with 之, 于, or 以 can sound antique, legalistic, or affected.
Formal Chinese values compactness, so headlines and labels often omit material that a full sentence would include: 所需材料 “required materials,” 注意事项 “matters requiring attention,” 有关规定 “relevant regulations.” Classical elements contribute to this compressed style. When writing, clarity is more important than compression; use a compact form only when you have seen it used as an established pattern.
Translations are context-sensitive. 予以处理 may become “handle the matter,” “take action,” “process it,” or even “discipline [someone],” depending on what is being handled. Likewise, 从而 often maps to “thereby,” but natural English may simply use “and as a result.” Translate the relationship, not each character.
Pronunciation follows normal Mandarin tones: 之 zhī, 于 yú, 以 yǐ, 而 ér, 所 suǒ. Their compactness is grammatical and stylistic, not a reason to pronounce surrounding words differently.
Beyond the Basics / Advanced Use
The passive pattern 为…所…
A more literary passive construction is:
subject + 为 + agent + 所 + verb
- 这一观点为许多学者所接受。 — This view is accepted by many scholars.
- 他为困难所困。 — He is beset by difficulties.
Here 为 introduces the agent or cause, and 所 appears before the verb. Modern Chinese can usually use 被 instead: 这一观点被许多学者接受。 The 为…所… version is formal and common in elevated prose, but it is not needed in conversation.
之所以…是因为…
In the modern explanatory frame 之所以 A,是因为 B, A is the result or situation being explained and B gives the reason:
- 他之所以迟到,是因为地铁停运了。 — The reason he was late is that the metro stopped running.
English speakers sometimes reverse the two ideas because both halves contain causal language. Remember: after 之所以 comes the fact needing explanation; after 是因为 comes its cause. In casual speech, a simple 因为B,所以A is often easier.
Productive patterns versus historical analysis
The same graph can have functions in Classical Chinese that are rare or absent in modern Mandarin. For example, classical 之 may be a verb meaning “go to,” a pronoun, or a structural particle. Those uses belong to a fuller study of Classical Chinese. For modern Mandarin, first distinguish three levels:
- a normal modern word containing the element, such as 所以 or 关于;
- a productive formal pattern, such as 以A为B or 所 + verb + 的 + noun;
- a quotation, idiom, or deliberately classical use.
This distinction prevents over-analysis. Knowing that 而 appears inside 而且 does not mean every occurrence of 而且 should be parsed as if it were an ancient sentence.
Rhythm and parallelism
Classical elements often appear in balanced, compact phrases: 取之于民,用之于民 means “take it from the people and use it for the people.” The repeated 之于 sequence creates parallelism (matching grammatical shapes for rhetorical effect). Such wording is memorable in slogans and speeches, but producing it well requires attention to symmetry and established usage. Recognition should come before imitation.
Practice Tips
- Build phrase families, not single-character flashcards. Group 于 with 位于、用于、高于、源于、致力于, and group 以 with 予以、加以、以便、以A为B. Write one realistic sentence for each whole pattern.
- Rewrite between registers. Change 我们面临的困难 into 我们所面临的困难, or 因为天气不好,所以活动取消了 into 由于天气原因,活动取消. Then note what became more formal and what meaning stayed the same.
- Annotate authentic reading. In one news article or official notice, circle every 之、于、以、而、所. Label each as part of a fixed word, a productive grammar pattern, or an idiom. This is more useful than forcing all five elements into your own prose at once.
