Resultative Complements in Vietnamese

Bổ Ngữ Kết Quả

Overview

Resultative complements are verb combinations where the second verb expresses the result or outcome of the first verb's action. "Ăn hết" (eat + finish = eat up), "nghe hiểu" (listen + understand = understand by listening), and "tìm được" (search + achieve = find) are all resultative constructions.

At the CEFR A2 level, resultative complements are essential because they express outcomes naturally. Vietnamese frequently uses these two-verb combinations instead of separate sentences or adverbs. They are a subset of serial verb constructions but specifically encode the result of an action.

This pattern is productive -- you can combine many action verbs with result verbs to create new meanings, making it a powerful tool for expanding your expressive range.

How It Works

Action Verb Result Verb Combined Meaning
ăn (eat) hết (finish) ăn hết eat up / finish eating
nghe (listen) hiểu (understand) nghe hiểu understand (by listening)
nhìn (look) thấy (perceive) nhìn thấy see (manage to spot)
tìm (search) được (achieve) tìm được find (successfully)
tìm (search) thấy (perceive) tìm thấy find (spot)
học (study) được (achieve) học được learn (successfully)
làm (do) xong (complete) làm xong finish doing
viết (write) xong (complete) viết xong finish writing
nghe (listen) thấy (perceive) nghe thấy hear (perceive sound)

Common result verbs:

Common Mistakes

Separating the Verb and Complement

  • Wrong: Tôi ăn cơm hết. (eating rice finish -- separating with object)
  • Right: Tôi ăn hết cơm. (eat-finish rice) or Tôi ăn cơm hết rồi.
  • Why: The resultative complement typically stays close to the action verb, though word order can be flexible in some cases.

Confusing Được as Result vs Permission

  • Wrong: Interpreting "mua được" as "allowed to buy" instead of "managed to buy"
  • Right: In resultative position (after action verb), "được" means successful achievement
  • Why: Post-verb "được" in a resultative sense = "managed to / succeeded in."

Using Xong and Hết Interchangeably

  • Wrong: Ăn xong cơm and ăn hết cơm meaning exactly the same
  • Right: "Ăn xong" = finished the act of eating; "ăn hết" = ate ALL of it (nothing left)
  • Why: "Xong" = action completed; "hết" = quantity exhausted/all gone.

Usage Notes

Resultative complements are used in questions to ask about outcomes: "Tìm được chưa?" (Found it yet?), "Nghe hiểu không?" (Understand?). These are very natural and common question patterns.

The distinction between "xong" (process complete) and "hết" (quantity exhausted) is important: "Tôi ăn xong" (I finished eating) vs "Tôi ăn hết" (I ate it all up).

Practice Tips

  • Create result pairs with common action verbs: ăn hết/xong, uống hết/xong, làm hết/xong, viết xong. Practice the subtle difference between hết and xong.
  • Use "được" as a result complement to talk about achievements: "Tôi học được tiếng Việt" (I managed to learn Vietnamese).
