چاہیے - Should/Ought To in Urdu
«چاہیے» — فرض و ذمہ داری
This article is part of the Urdu grammar tree on Settemila Lingue.
Overview
The invariable word چاہیے chāhiye expresses obligation, advice, and recommendation in Urdu — equivalent to English "should" or "ought to." At the CEFR B1 level, this construction is essential for giving advice, expressing duties, and discussing what is appropriate.
The pattern uses a dative experiencer (the person who should do something) marked with کو, followed by an infinitive and چاہیے. For example, مجھے جانا چاہیے (I should go, literally "to-me going should-be").
چاہیے is invariable — it never changes form for gender, number, or person.
How It Works
Basic Pattern
Person + کو + infinitive + چاہیے
| Person | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| مجھے | مجھے جانا چاہیے | I should go |
| آپ کو | آپ کو پڑھنا چاہیے | You should study |
| ہمیں | ہمیں محنت کرنی چاہیے | We should work hard |
| اسے | اسے آنا چاہیے | He/She should come |
Past Obligation: چاہیے تھا/تھی
For "should have," add the past auxiliary:
- مجھے جانا چاہیے تھا (I should have gone)
- تمہیں بتانا چاہیے تھا (You should have told)
Infinitive Agreement
The infinitive agrees with the object (if present and unmarked):
- ہمیں محنت کرنی چاہیے (کرنی agrees with محنت, f)
- مجھے یہ کام کرنا چاہیے (کرنا agrees with کام, m)

Common Mistakes
Making چاہیے Agree
- Wrong: مجھے جانا چاہیں۔ or چاہیے ہے۔
- Right: مجھے جانا چاہیے۔
- Why: چاہیے is invariable — it never changes form.
Forgetting Infinitive Agreement with Object
- Wrong: ہمیں محنت کرنا چاہیے۔ (masculine infinitive with feminine محنت)
- Right: ہمیں محنت کرنی چاہیے۔
- Why: The infinitive agrees with the object: feminine objects require feminine infinitive.
Using Subject Form Instead of Dative
- Wrong: میں جانا چاہیے۔
- Right: مجھے جانا چاہیے۔
- Why: The person who should do something is marked with کو (dative), not as a direct subject.
Usage Notes
چاہیے can range from mild suggestion to strong obligation depending on context and tone. آپ کو آرام کرنا چاہیے (You should rest) is gentle advice, while آپ کو فوراً جانا چاہیے (You should go immediately) is more urgent.
The past form (چاہیے تھا) often carries regret or criticism about something that was not done.
Practice Tips
- Practice giving advice about common situations: health, study, work.
- Convert advice to past obligation: "You should" → "You should have."
- Pay attention to infinitive gender agreement with the object.
