والا Construction in Urdu
والا کی ساخت
Overview
The suffix والا vālā is one of the most productive and versatile constructions in Urdu. At the CEFR B1 level, understanding والا is essential because it creates agent nouns (the milkman), attributive phrases (the red one), and near-future expressions (about to go).
والا agrees in gender and number: والا vālā (m.sg), والی vālī (f), والے vāle (m.pl/oblique). It can attach to nouns, adjectives, verbs (in oblique infinitive form), and even adverbs.

Common Mistakes
Forgetting والا Agreement
- Wrong: لال والا قمیض (masculine with feminine noun)
- Right: لال والی قمیض (قمیض is feminine)
- Why: والا agrees with the noun it modifies, just like an adjective.
Confusing Near Future with Present Continuous
- Wrong: Using والا for actions currently in progress
- Right: والا + ہونا = about to (imminent future), not currently doing
- Why: جانے والا ہوں (about to go) is different from جا رہا ہوں (going now).
Usage Notes
والا is colloquially ubiquitous. It creates ad-hoc descriptions that would require longer phrases in other languages: "the one with the green door" becomes سبز دروازے والا. It is productive enough that speakers create new والا forms spontaneously.
The term گھر والے (home-people) is the standard informal way to refer to one's family.
Practice Tips
- Practice creating والا descriptions for people and things around you.
- Use the near-future pattern to describe imminent events.
- Learn common والا professions: دودھ والا, اخبار والا, سبزی والا.
