Conditional Sentences in Urdu
شرطیہ جملے
Overview
Conditional sentences express "if...then" relationships and are a key CEFR B1 structure. Urdu uses اگر agar (if) in the condition clause and تو to (then) in the result clause. Urdu distinguishes between real conditions (things that might happen), unreal conditions (hypothetical), and counterfactual conditions (things that did not happen).
The type of condition is signaled by the verb forms used: subjunctive/future for real conditions, past habitual for unreal/counterfactual conditions. This system allows speakers to communicate degrees of possibility and reality with precision.
Mastering conditionals is essential for expressing plans, giving advice, making predictions, and discussing hypothetical scenarios.
How It Works
Types of Conditionals
| Type | If-clause Verb | Then-clause Verb | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Real/possible | Present/subjunctive | Future | اگر بارش ہو تو میں نہیں جاؤں گا |
| Unreal/hypothetical | Past habitual | Past habitual | اگر میرے پاس پیسے ہوتے تو میں جاتا |
| Counterfactual | Past habitual | Past habitual | اگر تم آتے تو اچھا ہوتا |
Structure
اگر + condition clause + تو + result clause
Wish Expressions
کاش (wish/if only) creates wish statements:
- کاش میں وہاں ہوتا۔ (I wish I were there.)
- کاش بارش ہو۔ (If only it would rain.)

Common Mistakes
Forgetting تو in the Result Clause
- Wrong: اگر بارش ہو، میں نہیں جاؤں گا۔
- Right: اگر بارش ہو تو میں نہیں جاؤں گا۔
- Why: The اگر...تو pair is expected in standard Urdu.
Using Future Tense in Counterfactual Conditions
- Wrong: اگر میرے پاس پیسے ہوں گے تو... (for hypothetical)
- Right: اگر میرے پاس پیسے ہوتے تو...
- Why: Counterfactual conditions use past habitual forms, not future.
Mixing Real and Unreal Patterns
- Wrong: اگر بارش ہوتی تو میں نہیں جاؤں گا۔ (mixing tenses)
- Right: Either اگر بارش ہو تو نہیں جاؤں گا (real) or اگر بارش ہوتی تو نہیں جاتا (unreal)
- Why: Both clauses must use consistent conditional type.
Usage Notes
In spoken Urdu, اگر is sometimes shortened to اگہ or dropped entirely, with تو alone signaling the conditional. However, including اگر is recommended for clarity.
The counterfactual conditional is also used for polite, softened requests: اگر آپ یہ کر دیتے تو بڑی مہربانی ہوتی (If you would do this, it would be a great kindness).
Practice Tips
- Practice all three conditional types with the same verb to feel the difference in possibility level.
- Create "what if" conversations: اگر آپ وزیر اعظم ہوتے تو...?
- Use کاش to express wishes about both present and past situations.
