Бути (to be) in Ukrainian

Дієслово Бути

Overview

The verb "бути" (to be) is one of the most important verbs in Ukrainian, yet it behaves very differently from English "to be." At the CEFR A1 level, the key insight is that Ukrainian typically omits "to be" in the present tense -- you simply juxtapose subject and predicate without any copula. This is a fundamental structural difference from English.

While the present tense is mostly dropped, "бути" is fully conjugated in the past and future tenses. The past tense forms (був, була, було, були) agree in gender and number with the subject, and the future tense forms (буду, будеш, буде, будемо, будете, будуть) follow standard conjugation patterns.

Understanding "бути" is also essential for existential constructions (є / немає) and for forming the compound future tense of imperfective verbs.

How It Works

Present Tense

In modern Ukrainian, "бути" is almost always omitted in the present tense. The third-person form "є" survives in specific contexts:

Usage Example
Omitted (standard) Я студент. (I am a student.)
є for emphasis/existence Є проблема. (There is a problem.)
є in formal definitions Мова є засіб спілкування. (Language is a means of communication.)

Past Tense

Past tense agrees in gender (singular) and number:

Form Gender/Number Example
був masculine sg Він був удома. (He was at home.)
була feminine sg Вона була вчителькою. (She was a teacher.)
було neuter sg Це було добре. (It was good.)
були plural Ми були в Києві. (We were in Kyiv.)

Future Tense

Person Singular Plural
1st буду будемо
2nd будеш будете
3rd буде будуть

These forms also serve as auxiliaries for the compound future: буду читати (I will read/be reading).

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Я вчитель. I am a teacher. No "to be" in present
Вона втомлена. She is tired. Zero copula
Я був удома. I was at home. Past masculine
Вона була зайнята. She was busy. Past feminine
Буде добре. It will be okay. Future 3rd person
Ми будемо там о п'ятій. We will be there at five. Future 1st plural
Він є президентом. He is the president. Formal/emphatic є
Де ти був? Where were you? Past interrogative
Це було цікаво. It was interesting. Past neuter
Будь готовий! Be ready! Imperative

Common Mistakes

Adding є in everyday present-tense sentences

  • Wrong: Я є студент.
  • Right: Я студент.
  • Why: In standard modern Ukrainian, the copula is dropped in the present tense. Using є sounds overly formal or influenced by English.

Wrong gender in past tense

  • Wrong: Вона був тут. (masculine form with feminine subject)
  • Right: Вона була тут.
  • Why: Past tense of бути must agree in gender with the subject.

Confusing past tense of бути with other verb past tenses

  • Wrong: Я бувши вчора тут.
  • Right: Я був вчора тут.
  • Why: The simple past form is був/була/було/були, not the participle form.

Usage Notes

The zero copula (omitting "to be" in the present) is one of the first things that surprises English speakers learning Ukrainian. It is not optional -- including є in everyday sentences sounds unnatural. The main exception is existential meaning: "У мене є собака" (I have a dog / At me there-is a dog).

In formal, academic, and legal writing, є is sometimes retained for clarity or stylistic reasons. This usage is more common in written than spoken Ukrainian.

Practice Tips

  1. Practice zero-copula sentences: Make a list of descriptions (I am a student, she is tired, they are here) and translate them without "to be." This trains you to drop the verb naturally.

  2. Gender-match drills: Write past-tense sentences with different subjects, focusing on matching був/була/було/були to the subject's gender and number.

  3. Future tense chains: Practice conjugating "буду, будеш, буде, будемо, будете, будуть" with different infinitives to build compound future fluency.
