Impersonal Constructions in Ukrainian

Overview

Impersonal constructions are sentences without a grammatical subject, and they are remarkably common in Ukrainian. At the CEFR B1 level, understanding these patterns is essential because Ukrainian uses them far more extensively than English -- for weather, physical/emotional states, necessity, possibility, and general truths.

These constructions typically use predicate words (треба, можна, варто), adverbs as predicates (холодно, весело, важко), or third-person singular verbs without a subject (іде дощ). The experiencer, if mentioned, appears in the dative case.

Impersonal constructions are one of the areas where Ukrainian grammar diverges most sharply from English, and mastering them marks a significant step in thinking in Ukrainian rather than translating from English.

Common Mistakes

Using nominative instead of dative

  • Wrong: Я холодно.
  • Right: Мені холодно.
  • Why: Impersonal constructions require the experiencer in dative case.

Adding a subject to weather expressions

  • Wrong: Воно йде дощ.
  • Right: Іде дощ.
  • Why: Ukrainian weather expressions have no grammatical subject -- no "it."

Conjugating impersonal predicates

  • Wrong: Я требую йти.
  • Right: Мені треба йти.
  • Why: Треба is an impersonal predicate, not a verb to conjugate.

Usage Notes

Impersonal constructions are preferred in Ukrainian for states and evaluations where English would use a personal subject: "I am cold" = Мені холодно (literally: "to-me cold"), "I am bored" = Мені нудно. This dative-experiencer pattern is one of the most productive in the language.

The distinction between можна (permitted/possible) and не можна (forbidden/impossible) is important for everyday communication, especially when asking permission.

Practice Tips

  1. State vocabulary: Learn adverbial predicates for states: холодно, жарко, весело, сумно, цікаво, нудно, важко, легко.

  2. Dative + state drills: Practice combining dative pronouns with state words.

  3. Weather descriptions: Describe weather using impersonal constructions for different seasons.
