Temporal Connectors in Ukrainian

Часові Сполучники

Overview

Temporal connectors link clauses by expressing time relationships -- when, before, after, while, and until. At the CEFR A2 level, these conjunctions are essential for narrating sequences of events, describing routines, and telling stories with proper temporal structure.

Ukrainian temporal connectors often interact with verbal aspect. Perfective verbs pair naturally with connectors expressing completed events (після того як, коли in the sense of "once"), while imperfective verbs pair with those expressing duration (поки, доки).

These connectors require a comma before the subordinate clause in Ukrainian punctuation, which differs from English conventions.

How It Works

Key Temporal Connectors

Ukrainian English Usage
коли when General temporal
перш ніж before Prior to event
після того як after Following event
поки while / until Duration / limit
доки until Until a condition
щойно as soon as Immediate sequence
відтоді як since (time) Starting point

Aspect with Temporal Connectors

  • Коли + perfective: single completed event (Коли прийшов, зателефонував.)
  • Коли + imperfective: background/habitual (Коли жив у Києві, часто ходив у театр.)
  • Поки + imperfective: simultaneous duration (Поки я спав, йшов дощ.)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Коли прийду, зателефоную. When I arrive, I'll call. Future event
Перш ніж підеш, скажи мені. Before you leave, tell me. Prior action
Поки я спав, йшов дощ. While I slept, it rained. Simultaneous
Чекай, доки не прийду. Wait until I come. Limit
Після того як поїв, пішов. After eating, he left. Sequence
Щойно він прийшов, почався дощ. As soon as he arrived, it started raining. Immediate
Відтоді як переїхав, не бачив друзів. Since I moved, I haven't seen friends. Starting point
Коли був молодий, багато читав. When I was young, I read a lot. Background
Не їж, поки не помиєш руки. Don't eat until you wash your hands. Condition
Зателефоную, як тільки зможу. I'll call as soon as I can. Immediate

Common Mistakes

Using perfective with поки for duration

  • Wrong: Поки я прочитав, він спав.
  • Right: Поки я читав, він спав.
  • Why: Поки (while) implies duration, requiring imperfective aspect.

Forgetting не after доки

  • Wrong: Чекай, доки прийду.
  • Right: Чекай, доки не прийду.
  • Why: In Ukrainian, "доки не" is the standard form for "until" (the "не" does not negate -- it is part of the conjunction structure).

Missing comma before temporal clause

  • Wrong: Коли прийшов зателефонував.
  • Right: Коли прийшов, зателефонував.
  • Why: Ukrainian requires a comma between clauses joined by subordinating conjunctions.

Usage Notes

"Коли" is the most versatile temporal connector and can mean "when," "whenever," or "while" depending on context and aspect. More specific connectors (перш ніж, після того як, поки) reduce ambiguity.

The expletive "не" in "доки не" and "поки не" (until) is a grammatical feature, not true negation. "Чекай, поки не прийду" means "Wait until I come," not "Wait until I don't come."

Practice Tips

  1. Sequence narration: Describe a process step by step using перш ніж, потім, після того як.

  2. Parallel events: Describe what was happening simultaneously using поки/коли + imperfective.

  3. Aspect matching: Practice choosing the correct aspect after each temporal connector.
