Genitive Case in Ukrainian

Родовий Відмінок

Overview

The genitive case (родовий відмінок) is arguably the most frequently used oblique case in Ukrainian and one of the most important to master at the CEFR A2 level. It serves multiple core functions: expressing possession, following negation, quantifying with numbers (5+), and appearing after numerous prepositions.

The genitive answers the questions "кого?" (of whom?) and "чого?" (of what?). Its wide range of uses means you will encounter it in virtually every Ukrainian text and conversation. Mastering genitive endings across genders and declension types is a significant milestone in your grammatical development.

The genitive also interacts closely with the number system (numbers 5 and above require genitive plural) and with negation (direct objects shift to genitive after negated verbs), making it central to Ukrainian sentence construction.

How It Works

Genitive Singular Endings

Gender/Type Ending Example
Masculine (animate/abstract) батька (of father)
Masculine (place/thing) -у / -а дому (of house), стола (of table)
Feminine -а книги (of book)
Feminine -я землі (of earth)
Neuter -о міста (of city)
Neuter -е поля (of field)

Genitive Plural Endings

Type Ending Example
Masculine -ів / -ей братів, учителів
Feminine -а zero ending книг, жінок
Neuter zero / -ів міст, полів

Main Uses of Genitive

  1. Possession: дім батька (father's house)
  2. After negation: Не маю часу (I don't have time)
  3. After numbers 5+: п'ять книг (five books)
  4. After prepositions: без (without), для (for), до (to), від (from), з (from)
  5. Partitive: склянка води (a glass of water)
  6. After немає: Немає проблем (No problem)

Common Mistakes

Wrong choice between -а and -у for masculine

  • Wrong: біля дома (instead of дому)
  • Right: біля дому
  • Why: Masculine nouns denoting places, abstract concepts, and materials typically take -у; animate beings and concrete countable objects take -а. This is one of the trickiest distinctions.

Forgetting genitive after negation

  • Wrong: Не бачу книгу. (accusative after negation)
  • Right: Не бачу книги. (genitive)
  • Why: Negated transitive verbs shift the direct object to genitive.

Wrong genitive plural

  • Wrong: п'ять книгів
  • Right: п'ять книг
  • Why: Feminine nouns typically take a zero ending in genitive plural. The -ів ending is for masculine nouns.

Usage Notes

The choice between -а and -у in masculine genitive singular is one of the most nuanced rules in Ukrainian grammar. General guidelines: -а for people, animals, concrete objects, specific items, and terms; -у for places, abstract concepts, materials, collective nouns, and some common words (дому, часу, вечора). When in doubt, consult a dictionary.

The genitive case appears after many common prepositions that A2 learners use daily: без (without), від (from), до (to/until), для (for), з (from/of), після (after), біля (near), навколо (around).

Practice Tips

  1. Preposition + genitive drills: Combine each genitive preposition with five different nouns, practicing the correct ending.

  2. Number + noun practice: Count objects from 1 to 10, noting when the noun shifts to genitive plural (at 5).

  3. Possession chains: Express ownership using genitive: "книга сестри," "дім батька," "машина друга."
