Reflexive Verbs in Ukrainian

Зворотні Дієслова

Overview

Reflexive verbs in Ukrainian are formed by adding the particle -ся (after consonants) or -сь (after vowels) to the verb. At the CEFR A2 level, reflexive verbs are essential because they cover self-directed actions, reciprocal actions, passive meanings, and many common verbs that are inherently reflexive.

The reflexive particle -ся/-сь is not a separate word but attaches directly to the verb form. Unlike Romance languages where reflexive pronouns change with person (me, te, se), Ukrainian uses the same particle for all persons, simplifying the system.

Many everyday verbs are reflexive without having a non-reflexive counterpart: вчитися (to study/learn), подобатися (to be liked), знаходитися (to be located), сміятися (to laugh).

How It Works

Types of Reflexive Verbs

  1. True reflexive (action on oneself): митися (to wash oneself), одягатися (to dress oneself)
  2. Reciprocal: зустрічатися (to meet each other), цілуватися (to kiss each other)
  3. Inherently reflexive: сміятися (to laugh), боятися (to fear), намагатися (to try)
  4. Passive meaning: Будинок будується. (The house is being built.)

Conjugation Example: митися (to wash oneself)

Person Singular Plural
1st миюся миємося
2nd миєшся миєтеся
3rd миється миються

-ся vs -сь

  • After consonants: миєшся, миються
  • After vowels: миюсь (colloquial alternative to миюся)

In standard Ukrainian, -ся is used in all positions; -сь is the colloquial/literary variant after vowels.

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Я миюся. I wash myself. True reflexive
Вона вчиться. She studies/learns. Inherently reflexive
Мені подобається. I like it. Reflexive + dative
Як тебе звати? What's your name? Literally "How do they call you-self?"
Ми зустрічаємося щодня. We meet every day. Reciprocal
Він сміється. He laughs. Inherently reflexive
Двері зачиняються. The doors are closing. Passive/spontaneous
Боюся собак. I'm afraid of dogs. Inherently reflexive
Намагаюся зрозуміти. I'm trying to understand. Inherently reflexive
Де знаходиться музей? Where is the museum located? Location reflexive

Common Mistakes

Separating -ся from the verb

  • Wrong: Я ся мию.
  • Right: Я миюся.
  • Why: In modern standard Ukrainian, -ся is attached to the end of the verb, not placed before it.

Using a reflexive verb with a direct object

  • Wrong: Я миюся руки. (reflexive + object)
  • Right: Я мию руки. (non-reflexive with object)
  • Why: If the action is directed at a specific object, use the non-reflexive form.

Forgetting that some verbs are always reflexive

  • Wrong: Я сміяю. (without -ся)
  • Right: Я сміюся.
  • Why: Сміятися has no non-reflexive form. It is inherently reflexive.

Usage Notes

Reflexive verbs are very productive in Ukrainian. Adding -ся to a transitive verb often creates an intransitive or passive meaning: будувати (to build) → будуватися (to be built); відкривати (to open something) → відкриватися (to open by itself / be opened).

The construction "Як тебе/Вас звати?" (What is your name?) uses the reflexive verb "зватися" and is one of the first phrases learners encounter.

Practice Tips

  1. Reflexive pairs: Learn transitive/reflexive pairs side by side: мити/митися, одягати/одягатися.

  2. Daily routine: Describe your morning routine using reflexive verbs: прокидатися, митися, одягатися, збиратися.

  3. Inherently reflexive list: Memorize common verbs that exist only in reflexive form.
