Question Formation in Ukrainian

Питання

Overview

Forming questions in Ukrainian is straightforward once you understand the two main patterns: yes/no questions and information questions with question words. At the CEFR A1 level, these patterns are essential for basic conversation -- asking for information, confirming understanding, and navigating everyday situations.

Unlike English, Ukrainian does not require auxiliary verbs ("do," "does," "did") to form questions. Yes/no questions can be formed simply through intonation (rising at the end) or by adding the particle "чи" at the beginning. Information questions use question words that occupy the initial position in the sentence.

Word order in Ukrainian questions is more flexible than in English, which is both a benefit (less restructuring needed) and a challenge (you must rely on intonation and question words rather than word order to signal a question).

How It Works

Yes/No Questions

Two methods:

  1. Intonation only: Say a statement with rising intonation at the end.

    • Ти говориш українською? (Do you speak Ukrainian?)
  2. Particle чи: Place "чи" at the beginning of the sentence.

    • Чи ти говориш українською? (Do you speak Ukrainian?)

Question Words

Ukrainian English Example
що what Що це? (What is this?)
хто who Хто це? (Who is this?)
де where Де ти живеш? (Where do you live?)
коли when Коли ти прийдеш? (When will you come?)
як how Як тебе звати? (What's your name?)
чому why Чому ні? (Why not?)
скільки how much/many Скільки це коштує? (How much does this cost?)
який/яка/яке which/what kind Яка це книга? (What book is this?)
куди where (to) Куди ти йдеш? (Where are you going?)
звідки where (from) Звідки ти? (Where are you from?)

Question word placement

The question word typically comes first, followed by the rest of the sentence in relatively free order:

  • Де живе Марія? / Де Марія живе? (both correct)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Чи ти говориш українською? Do you speak Ukrainian? Чи + statement
Де ти живеш? Where do you live? Question word + verb
Як тебе звати? What's your name? Literally "How do they call you?"
Чому? Why? Standalone question word
Скільки це коштує? How much does this cost? Quantity question
Ти працюєш тут? Do you work here? Intonation only
Що ти робиш? What are you doing? Object question
Куди йдемо? Where are we going? Direction question
Хто це зробив? Who did this? Subject question
Коли починається урок? When does the lesson start? Time question

Common Mistakes

Using English-style auxiliary verbs

  • Wrong: Чи ти робиш говорити українською?
  • Right: Чи ти говориш українською?
  • Why: Ukrainian does not use auxiliary verbs for question formation. Simply use чи or intonation.

Forgetting case on question words

  • Wrong: Хто ти бачиш? (nominative for direct object)
  • Right: Кого ти бачиш?
  • Why: Question words хто and що decline for case: хто (nom), кого (acc/gen), кому (dat), etc.

Overusing чи

  • Wrong: Using чи in information questions: Чи де ти живеш?
  • Right: Де ти живеш?
  • Why: Чи is only for yes/no questions, not for information questions that already have a question word.

Usage Notes

In casual speech, intonation-only questions are the most common. The particle чи adds a slightly more formal or deliberate tone and is standard in written Ukrainian. In very informal speech, you might hear "а" or "та" used as question tags.

The question word "як" has a broader range of use than English "how" -- "Як тебе звати?" literally means "How do they call you?" but functions as "What is your name?"

Practice Tips

  1. Question word flashcards: Drill the ten main question words until they are automatic, then practice embedding them in simple sentences.

  2. Statement-to-question conversion: Take declarative sentences and transform them into both a чи-question and an information question.

  3. Role-play introductions: Practice a simple introduction dialogue using Як тебе звати?, Де ти живеш?, Звідки ти?
