Question Formation in Russian
Overview
Forming questions in Russian is remarkably straightforward compared to English -- there is no auxiliary verb ("do/does"), no subject-verb inversion required, and no complex tense-dependent rules. At the A1 level, mastering Russian question formation opens up the ability to have real conversations: asking for directions, learning about people, and clarifying information.
For yes/no questions, Russian simply uses rising intonation on the key word, with no change in word order. The statement "Ты говоришь по-русски" (You speak Russian) becomes "Ты говоришь по-русски?" just by raising your voice at the end. For information questions, Russian uses question words (кто, что, где, когда, как, почему) placed at the beginning of the sentence.
The particle ли can also be used for yes/no questions, especially in formal or literary contexts, and the question words themselves decline (change form) when used in different grammatical roles -- a feature that becomes more important at higher levels.
How It Works
Yes/No Questions
Simply use rising intonation. The word carrying the main question focus receives the intonation peak:
- Ты говоришь по-русски? (Do you speak Russian?)
- Это твоя книга? (Is this your book?)
Question Words
| Russian | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| кто? | who? | Кто это? (Who is this?) |
| что? | what? | Что это? (What is this?) |
| где? | where? | Где ты живёшь? (Where do you live?) |
| куда? | where to? | Куда ты идёшь? (Where are you going?) |
| откуда? | where from? | Откуда вы? (Where are you from?) |
| когда? | when? | Когда ты придёшь? (When will you come?) |
| как? | how? | Как тебя зовут? (What is your name?) |
| почему? | why? | Почему ты опоздал? (Why are you late?) |
| сколько? | how much/many? | Сколько это стоит? (How much does it cost?) |
| какой? | which/what kind? | Какой язык ты учишь? (What language are you studying?) |
Examples in Context
| Russian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Ты говоришь по-русски? | Do you speak Russian? | Intonation only |
| Кто это? | Who is this? | Question word |
| Где ты живёшь? | Where do you live? | Location question |
| Почему ты опоздал? | Why are you late? | Reason question |
| Это твоя книга? | Is this your book? | Yes/no, intonation |
| Как дела? | How are things? | Common greeting |
| Сколько это стоит? | How much does this cost? | Quantity question |
| Когда он придёт? | When will he come? | Time question |
| Куда вы едете? | Where are you going? | Direction question |
| Какой это город? | What city is this? | Type/identity question |
Common Mistakes
Adding auxiliary verbs like English "do/does"
- Wrong: Делаешь ты говорить по-русски?
- Right: Ты говоришь по-русски?
- Why: Russian does not use auxiliary verbs for questions. Just add rising intonation.
Confusing где (location) with куда (direction)
- Wrong: Где ты идёшь? (Where are you located walking?)
- Right: Куда ты идёшь? (Where are you going to?)
- Why: Где asks about a static location; куда asks about direction of movement.
Flat intonation on yes/no questions
- Wrong: Pronouncing "Ты студент?" with flat intonation (sounds like a statement)
- Right: Rise sharply on the stressed syllable of the key word: "Ты студЕнт?"
- Why: Without rising intonation, there is no grammatical marker distinguishing a question from a statement.
Practice Tips
- Practice the intonation pattern by recording yourself asking yes/no questions and listening back. The rise should be noticeable and natural.
- Learn question words in pairs that contrast: где/куда (location/direction), кто/что (who/what), когда/как (when/how).
