Prepositions of Place in Ukrainian

Прийменники Місця

Overview

Location prepositions are among the first grammatical tools you need at the CEFR A1 level, since expressing where things are and where you are going is fundamental to everyday communication. In Ukrainian, every preposition governs a specific case, so learning prepositions of place means simultaneously learning which case endings to apply.

The most important location prepositions are у/в and на (in/on/at), до (to), з/від (from), and біля (near). The distinction between у/в + locative (static location) and до + genitive (direction toward) is a core pattern that repeats throughout the language.

Ukrainian also has a distinctive pattern for countries and regions: some take "в" (в Україні) while others take "на" (на Кубі), and learning these conventions is part of mastering spatial expressions.

How It Works

Static Location (where?)

Preposition Case Meaning Example
у / в locative in, at у домі (in the house)
на locative on, at на столі (on the table)
біля genitive near, by біля школи (near school)
між instrumental between між домом і школою

Direction (where to?)

Preposition Case Meaning Example
до genitive to, toward до школи (to school)
у / в accusative into у магазин (into the store)
на accusative onto на стіл (onto the table)

Origin (where from?)

Preposition Case Meaning Example
з genitive from (out of) з України (from Ukraine)
від genitive from (away from) від вокзалу (from the station)

У vs В

These are euphonic variants: у is used after consonants, в after vowels. See the У/В Alternation concept for details.

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
у домі (loc) in the house Static location
на столі (loc) on the table Surface location
до школи (gen) to school Direction
з України (gen) from Ukraine Origin
біля парку (gen) near the park Proximity
у магазині in the store Location in building
на вулиці on the street "На" for streets
від мене далеко far from me Distance
між містами between cities Instrumental
під столом (inst) under the table Position below

Common Mistakes

Using nominative after prepositions

  • Wrong: у школа
  • Right: у школі
  • Why: У for static location requires locative case.

Confusing direction and location cases

  • Wrong: Іду у школі (locative for direction)
  • Right: Іду до школи or Іду у школу
  • Why: Direction uses до + genitive or у/на + accusative, not locative.

Wrong preposition for countries

  • Wrong: на Україні (outdated/Russian pattern)
  • Right: в Україні
  • Why: Modern standard Ukrainian uses "в Україні" for Ukraine. The "на" form is considered outdated.

Mixing з and від

  • Wrong: Я від Києва (meaning "I'm from Kyiv")
  • Right: Я з Києва.
  • Why: For origin (hometown, country), use з + genitive. Від implies physical movement away from a point.

Usage Notes

The choice between у/в and на for buildings and institutions follows conventions that must be learned individually. Generally: у школі (in school), у магазині (in the store), but на пошті (at the post office), на вокзалі (at the station), на роботі (at work).

For countries, most take "в/у": в Україні, у Франції, у Німеччині. Some traditionally take "на": на Кубі, на Мальті (typically islands).

Practice Tips

  1. Location-direction pairs: Practice expressing both "I am at X" (location) and "I am going to X" (direction) for the same places.

  2. Room description: Describe where objects are in your room using у/в, на, під, між, біля.

  3. Preposition + case cards: Create flashcards pairing each preposition with its required case and a sample noun in that case.
