Complex Prepositions in Ukrainian

Overview

Several Ukrainian prepositions can govern different cases, with the case determining the meaning. At the CEFR B1 level, understanding these dual-case prepositions is essential because they are among the most frequently used words in the language, and using the wrong case changes the meaning entirely.

The most important dual-case prepositions are у/в and на (location vs direction), за (behind vs for/in time), and з (from vs with). This case-meaning interaction is a hallmark of the Ukrainian case system and demonstrates how cases carry semantic weight beyond mere grammar.

How It Works

У/В and На: Location vs Direction

Preposition + Locative (where?) + Accusative (where to?)
у/в у магазині (in the store) у магазин (into the store)
на на пошті (at the post office) на пошту (to the post office)

За: Multiple Meanings

Case Meaning Example
Accusative for (time period), in exchange за годину (in an hour)
Instrumental behind, beyond за будинком (behind the building)
Accusative for (in favor of) голосувати за (vote for)

З/Із/Зі: Multiple Meanings

Case Meaning Example
Genitive from, out of з України (from Ukraine)
Instrumental with (accompaniment) з братом (with brother)

По: Multiple Cases

Case Meaning Example
Locative after по обіді (after lunch)
Accusative up to по коліна (up to the knees)
Dative along, each по вулиці (along the street)

Examples in Context

Ukrainian English Note
Іду на пошту. (acc) I'm going to the post office. Direction
Я на пошті. (loc) I'm at the post office. Location
за годину (acc) in an hour Time
за будинком (inst) behind the building Position
з молоком (inst) with milk Accompaniment
з Києва (gen) from Kyiv Origin
Сідаю у крісло. (acc) I sit down in the chair. Direction
Сиджу у кріслі. (loc) I'm sitting in the chair. Location
по обіді (loc) after lunch Temporal
голосую за мир (acc) I vote for peace Purpose

Common Mistakes

Using locative for direction

  • Wrong: Іду на пошті.
  • Right: Іду на пошту.
  • Why: Direction requires accusative; location requires locative.

Wrong case with за

  • Wrong: за будинку (genitive after за)
  • Right: за будинком (instrumental for "behind")
  • Why: За + instrumental = behind/beyond; за + accusative = for/within time.

Mixing з + genitive and з + instrumental

  • Wrong: Я з брата. (genitive for accompaniment)
  • Right: Я з братом. (instrumental for "with")
  • Why: З + genitive = from; з + instrumental = with.

Usage Notes

The location/direction distinction with у/в and на is one of the most fundamental patterns in Ukrainian. It affects virtually every sentence about physical space. Think of it as: accusative = motion toward, locative = static position.

Some prepositions have shifted meaning from older Ukrainian: по + dative (along, each) is now sometimes replaced by colloquial usage, and по + locative (after) competes with після + genitive.

Practice Tips

  1. Location/direction pairs: For common places, practice both "I'm at X" (locative) and "I'm going to X" (accusative).
  2. За meaning drills: Write sentences using за with each meaning: time, position, purpose.
  3. З case distinction: Practice з + genitive (from) vs з + instrumental (with) with the same nouns.
