Modal Verbs in Ukrainian
Модальні Дієслова
Overview
Modal verbs express ability, necessity, desire, and permission -- concepts that are essential for everyday communication from the very beginning. At the CEFR A1 level, Ukrainian modal verbs and modal expressions allow you to say what you can do, must do, want to do, and know how to do.
Ukrainian modal verbs include both conjugated verbs (могти, хотіти, мусити, вміти) and impersonal expressions (треба, можна, потрібно). The impersonal forms are particularly important because they are among the most common ways to express necessity and possibility in everyday Ukrainian.
Modal verbs are followed by an infinitive, creating a two-verb pattern: "Можу допомогти" (I can help), "Хочу їсти" (I want to eat).
How It Works
Conjugated Modal Verbs
| Verb | Meaning | 1st sg | 2nd sg | 3rd sg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| могти | can, be able | можу | можеш | може |
| хотіти | want | хочу | хочеш | хоче |
| мусити | must, have to | мушу | мусиш | мусить |
| вміти | know how to | вмію | вмієш | вміє |
Impersonal Modal Expressions
| Expression | Meaning | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| треба | it is necessary | Треба зробити. (One must do it.) |
| можна | one can, it is allowed | Можна увійти? (May I enter?) |
| потрібно | it is needed | Потрібно працювати. (One needs to work.) |
| не можна | one cannot, forbidden | Тут не можна палити. (No smoking here.) |
Impersonal expressions use the dative for the person affected: Мені треба йти. (I need to go.)
Pattern: Modal + Infinitive
All modals are followed by the infinitive of the main verb:
- Можу читати. (I can read.)
- Хочу вчити українську. (I want to learn Ukrainian.)
- Треба працювати. (One must work.)

Common Mistakes
Confusing могти and вміти
- Wrong: Я можу плавати. (when meaning "I know how to swim")
- Right: Я вмію плавати.
- Why: Могти = physical/situational ability ("I can right now"); вміти = learned skill ("I know how to").
Forgetting dative with impersonal modals
- Wrong: Я треба йти.
- Right: Мені треба йти.
- Why: Impersonal modals use the dative case for the person: мені (to me), тобі (to you).
Using потрібно as a verb
- Wrong: Я потрібную допомогу.
- Right: Мені потрібна допомога. or Мені потрібно допомогти.
- Why: Потрібно is an impersonal predicate, not a conjugated verb.
Usage Notes
The choice between conjugated modals and impersonal expressions often reflects formality and register. Мусити (must) is somewhat formal; треба is the everyday equivalent. Можна is the standard way to ask permission.
"Повинен/повинна/повинні" (obliged, supposed to) is another way to express obligation that declines like an adjective: Він повинен працювати (He is supposed to work).
Practice Tips
Daily obligations: List five things you must do today using both мусити and треба.
Can vs know how: Practice distinguishing могти and вміти with various activities.
Permission dialogues: Practice asking and granting permission using Можна...? -- Так, можна. / Ні, не можна.
