Present Tense (Conjugation II) in Ukrainian
Теперішній Час (II дієвідміна)
Overview
The second conjugation is the smaller of Ukrainian's two verb classes, but it contains many high-frequency verbs that you will use daily. At the CEFR A1 level, recognizing and producing second conjugation forms is essential for expressing actions like speaking, seeing, loving, and learning.
Second conjugation verbs are distinguished by the vowel -и- (or -ї- after vowels) in their personal endings, in contrast to the -е-/-є- of the first conjugation. Many second conjugation verbs end in -ити or -іти in the infinitive.
Learning to identify which conjugation class a verb belongs to is a critical skill, since using the wrong set of endings is one of the most common errors at this level.
How It Works
Second Conjugation Endings
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | -у / -ю | -имо / -їмо |
| 2nd | -иш / -їш | -ите / -їте |
| 3rd | -ить / -їть | -ять / -ять |
Example: говорити (to speak)
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | говорю | говоримо |
| 2nd | говориш | говорите |
| 3rd | говорить | говорять |
Example: бачити (to see)
| Person | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | бачу | бачимо |
| 2nd | бачиш | бачите |
| 3rd | бачить | бачать |
Note the first person singular often has a consonant change: говор-ити → говор-ю (р+ю), бач-ити → бач-у.
Common Second Conjugation Verbs
любити (love), бачити (see), говорити (speak), вчити (teach/learn), просити (ask/request), ходити (walk/go), робити (do/make)

Common Mistakes
Using first conjugation endings
- Wrong: Ти говореш.
- Right: Ти говориш.
- Why: Говорити is second conjugation: the endings use -и-, not -е-.
Forgetting consonant changes in first person
- Wrong: Я ходю.
- Right: Я ходжу.
- Why: Many second conjugation verbs undergo consonant alternation in the first person singular: д→дж, с→ш, т→ч, з→ж.
Mixing up third person plural
- Wrong: Вони говорють.
- Right: Вони говорять.
- Why: Second conjugation third person plural ends in -ять (not -ють, which belongs to first conjugation).
Usage Notes
A useful rule of thumb: verbs with infinitives in -ити and -іти are typically second conjugation, while verbs in -ати, -увати, -яти are typically first. However, there are exceptions, and the safest approach is to learn each verb's conjugation class alongside its meaning.
Second conjugation first-person forms frequently show consonant alternations. The most common are: д→дж (ходити→ходжу), с→ш (просити→прошу), т→ч (платити→плачу), з→ж (возити→вожу). These changes occur only in the first person singular.
Practice Tips
Contrast drills: Conjugate pairs of verbs from different conjugations side by side (читати vs говорити) to internalize the different endings.
First-person focus: For each new second conjugation verb, immediately learn the first-person form to capture any consonant change.
Verb sorting: Given a list of infinitives, sort them into first and second conjugation based on their endings, then verify with a dictionary.
