Instrumental Case in Ukrainian
Орудний Відмінок
Overview
The instrumental case (орудний відмінок) expresses the means or tool used to perform an action, accompaniment, and predicate nouns after the verb "бути." At the CEFR A2 level, the instrumental is essential for describing how things are done, who you are with, and what profession someone holds.
The instrumental answers "ким?" (by whom?) and "чим?" (with what?). It appears after prepositions з/зі (with), за (behind/after), між (between), над (above), and під (under/below). Its endings are among the most distinctive in the Ukrainian case system.
A notable function of the instrumental in Ukrainian is its use as the predicate case -- after "бути" in past and future tenses, the predicate noun takes instrumental: "Він був лікарем" (He was a doctor).
How It Works
Instrumental Singular Endings
| Gender/Type | Ending | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Masculine | -ом / -ем | братом, учителем |
| Feminine -а | -ою | жінкою, книгою |
| Feminine -я | -ею | землею |
| Neuter | -ом / -ем | містом, полем |
Instrumental Plural: -ами / -ями for all genders

Common Mistakes
Using nominative for predicate nouns
- Wrong: Він був лікар.
- Right: Він був лікарем.
- Why: In past and future tenses, the predicate noun after бути takes instrumental.
Forgetting instrumental for means of transport
- Wrong: Їду на поїзд. (when meaning "by train")
- Right: Їду поїздом.
- Why: Means of transport uses instrumental without a preposition.
Wrong preposition case pairing
- Wrong: між дома і школи (genitive after між)
- Right: між домом і школою (instrumental)
- Why: Між always requires instrumental case.
Usage Notes
The instrumental as a predicate case is distinctly Slavic. In present tense, the predicate can be nominative (Він лікар) or instrumental (Він є лікарем -- more formal). In past and future, instrumental is standard: Він був лікарем, Він буде лікарем.
Feminine instrumental -ою/-ею is sometimes shortened to -ов/-ев in poetry but not in standard prose.
Practice Tips
Tool inventory: Describe actions with their tools: "Пишу ручкою, їм виделкою, ріжу ножем."
Accompaniment sentences: Practice "з + instrumental" with different people: з мамою, з братом, з друзями.
Profession chains: List professions in instrumental: лікарем, вчителем, інженером.
