Imperative Mood in Ukrainian
Наказовий Спосіб
Overview
The imperative mood is used for commands, requests, invitations, and instructions. At the CEFR B1 level, mastering the imperative allows you to give directions, make requests politely, and participate in collaborative situations using "let's" constructions.
Ukrainian imperative has three forms: second person singular (ти), first person plural (ми -- "let's"), and second person plural/formal (ви). The endings depend on the verb's conjugation class and the final consonant of the present tense stem. Negative imperatives simply add "не" before the verb.
Politeness in Ukrainian imperatives comes not from different verb forms but from adding softening words: будь ласка (please), прошу (I ask/please), and using the ви-form.
How It Works
Imperative Endings
| Form | Ending | Example (писати) |
|---|---|---|
| 2nd sg (ти) | -и / -й | пиши |
| 1st pl (ми) | -імо / -мо | пишімо |
| 2nd pl (ви) | -іть / -йте | пишіть |
Formation Rules
- Take the 3rd person plural present stem
- If stem ends in two consonants or has stress on the ending: add -и, -імо, -іть
- If stem ends in one consonant or vowel: add -й, -ймо, -йте
Common Imperatives
| Infinitive | ти | ми | ви |
|---|---|---|---|
| читати | читай | читаймо | читайте |
| писати | пиши | пишімо | пишіть |
| говорити | говори | говорімо | говоріть |
| іти | іди | ідімо | ідіть |
| дати | дай | даймо | дайте |
| бути | будь | будьмо | будьте |
Examples in Context
| Ukrainian | English | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Пиши! | Write! | Informal command |
| Говоріть повільніше, будь ласка. | Please speak more slowly. | Polite request |
| Ходімо! | Let's go! | Invitation |
| Сідайте, прошу. | Please sit down. | Formal politeness |
| Не забудь! | Don't forget! | Negative imperative |
| Дай мені руку. | Give me your hand. | Informal |
| Будьте обережні! | Be careful! | Formal/plural |
| Читайте далі. | Keep reading. | Formal instruction |
| Слухай! | Listen! | Attention-getter |
| Не хвилюйтеся. | Don't worry. | Formal reassurance |
Common Mistakes
Using infinitive as imperative
- Wrong: Сідати! (infinitive used as command)
- Right: Сідай! or Сідайте!
- Why: While infinitive commands exist in some Slavic languages, Ukrainian prefers proper imperative forms.
Wrong ending choice
- Wrong: Говорій!
- Right: Говори!
- Why: Verbs with stem-final stress and consonant clusters take -и, not -й.
Forgetting будь ласка for politeness
- Wrong: Дайте мені воду. (abrupt)
- Right: Дайте мені воду, будь ласка.
- Why: Without a softener, imperatives in Ukrainian can sound demanding.
Usage Notes
The 1st person plural imperative (-ймо/-імо) functions like English "let's": Ходімо! (Let's go!), Почнімо! (Let's begin!). This is a common and natural construction.
"Будь" (be, imperative) appears in many fixed phrases: будь ласка (please), будь обережний (be careful), будь здоров (stay healthy / bless you).
Practice Tips
Common command pairs: Learn imperatives for everyday verbs in both ти and ви forms.
Polite request formulas: Practice "verb-imperative + будь ласка" and "Прошу + verb-imperative."
Let's do it: Practice inviting actions using the -ймо/-імо form.
